Super common date. It's never going to be worth more than silver value. Have at it if you wish. You can't really hurt it.

I'd leave it as is and make a plaque using it and other finds - would make an interesting wall hanger.

Incredible find, but not incredible coin. I'd just leave it as is.

It's your coin and you can do whatever you want with it. In the old days it would get scrubbed up with a paste made of baking soda and water.

On this one it will end up looking crappy no matter what you do to it.

I like the idea of making it part of an "as found" display!

A pocket piece may be the way to go. Nice dig!

Pocket piece is a good idea. In my opinion, leaving it as is reminds you of the story of how it was found. If he didn't find his ring, maybe it's not such a great memory...

thank you all for your input. It will of course be the coin owners call but he may end up using it as his ball marker. If that is the case, I may give a cleaning to it for him. I was thinking I couldn't make it worse than what it was but having a few other opinions helps solidify that for me.

Pocket piece the only way to go... Dipping will make it look awful IMO.

Shiny clean, dug coins have no character. 99% of my dug silver gets a rinse, dry, and put up in a 2x2 with date, location found, then into plastic pocket-pages inside a 3-ring binder. One Morgan dollar I did clean, as it came out of the ground a brown color, when I posted it online it was considered counterfeit. I cleaned it heavily to get to silver, posted new pics and all agreed it was genuine.
