to the forum! There are several counterfeits of this coin currently available from around $15.00. They refer to them as "restrikes" and sell them as novelty items. This is most likely what you have. There are around 30+ known genuine examples of a 1944 Lincoln Cent struck on Steel planchets. During 1944, the US mint was minting foreign coins using the same Steel planchets used for the 1943 US cents. This could be the reason why the 1944 Steel cents do exist. You can learn more about this on this page: http://Lincolncentsonline.com/trans...lErrors.htmlI hope it is genuine, but looking at the photo posted, it is unlikely.

Quote: The 9 looks strange too! Now that you mention it, Mark, it definitely does. In fact, the entire obverse looks strange. Given the 3.0g weight, I'm leaning toward cwb's suggestion of a novelty "restrike", or fake.

The face isn't correct, details mushy, rim is finning badly, sign of different press operation...how much more ya want, and that's just the obverse, haven't seen the reverse.

Nice find, worth a few bucks as novelty. Send it in to PCGS and it might come back genuinely genuine. That ones a heartbreaker, bet it got the blood pumping though. My 1964 D two headed cent got me jazzed up for about 5 seconds then I said Ghaaad what a bunch of baloney. Its a neat forgery though.

Luvmycam: I have your other sides, a two tailes Memorial, was real excited too, until old Grumpy LCS showed me the rim seam! Mine even has a 20% rotated....reverse

Crazybo how be ya? Man I'm trying to get pics loaded of some of my finds both real and imaginary :) the pixels and sizing throw me off. Hang onto your hats though as I'm getting better and will have my "coming out of the closet party". That didn't sound right did it? Ha.

Thank you for all the input on this. I believe I'm going to take the chance and send it in to PCGS. Thanks again

In the absence of any further evidence, the only information of any conclusive import is that it's too heavy for a steel planchet. Sending it in may be the only way to be sure, since we've too little data to offer any kind of conclusive opinion, but the weight, if accurate, is a stopper.
