Generally, I would agree that the mint make took a hit although this is not one of those times. The thickness of the MM is not great enough to be split in half and then be bent up and flipped onto its reverse side, especially with no signs or evidence of tool marks or stress. I suppose I will wait until Tuesday and have a professional look at it as well. If anyone has an example like this, please share it.

I am physically looking at a few other 1919-S at the moment and I just cannot get my head around this one.

I would guess that area at the top of the damaged S is depressed a little. Maybe it was stuck by a flat-blade screw driver or a knife, causing the top of the S to press down and also dig up part of the field to make a small line at the top of the S.

Thanks for the input Fuzzy. It is nice to know how you came to a conclusion by stating what you were thinking.

So, what do you think it is?

There is only one verified RPM for 1919-S and no OMMs. It could be a broken mintmark punch, I suppose. Hopefully, others will comment because we have professionals here as well.

One thing to consider is the other multiple hits on the obverse. How could the mintmark have escaped the mayhem?

I do not think that the mint mark took a hit, and your idea of a broken mint mark punch sounds the most logical. That is probably what I will ask when I see my guy on Tuesday and I'll make sure I mentioned it was suggested to me from someone on a forum.

Thanks

to CCF. Why would you want to slab a coin worth less than $1 by a TPG? I know you won't believe me either but it does look like the S mint mark took a hit,PSD. I say this WADR and it is only my opinion. Please let us know what your guy says and what his qualifications are.

just PMD, I wouldn't waste my money sending it to get it graded, stay here and you'll learn to see the difference from PMD vs real error.

To CCF! It's just PMD (Post Mint Damage) on the mintmark. You should just believe us and the guy you are going to see is going to say the same thing to you. I wouldn't waste my money getting this coin graded. Stay here for awhile and you will learn the difference between PMD vs a legit Mint error.

Whatever it is, it's definitely not worth TPG fees.

The S has been hit a couple of times. This coin is barely worth a 2 x 2 let alone a TPG.

Just what exactly of a DAMAGED MINTMARK do you (the OP) not understand? Give me a high res closeup and it will be obvious. And NO, it is not a broken punch, pieces fall off the punch, not move around. The tensile strength of the punch is twice as hard as the die material, but more brittle!

I just wanted to say that I appreciate everybody and their input. I know there is no monetary value for this coin but I will keep it because I like how it looks. As far as sending it out it's not worth spending the money on it. I have an uncirculated 1972 half dollar it would be better spent on.

Thank you for making it clear, your opinions on the coin. This is why I joined the community and I will continue to listen to your advice, you are the pros as far as I am concerned.

Thanks again.

That's what collecting is all about! However, we do try to save others from wasting money on grading when it's unnecessary. The grading costs could buy a nice coin, after all.

I apologize for the somewhat misleading suggestion of a broken mintmark punch. I was pretty sure that wasn't the cause but, was trying to think of any reasonable possibility other than PMD.

Do stick around and keep posting interesting finds and questions! I look forward to them.
