Great find Spruett001!

Thanks! The auction that it's in right now has a number of other items that I don't really need or want and seeing the price it's getting on ebay gives me some sense of its' value. I'll likely not put any bids in as the price is already much higher than what your post indicates.

It's a nice item but I's rather put my $$$ to actual real coins.

Probably a marketing sample tool for the RCM bullion dealers

I'm glad I could help. I found nothing else about it.

I would much rather buy a real silver Maple Leaf with that money.

Agree about the SML - although the only thing the gold paper weight has going for it is that it's not likely to develop milk spots.

Come to think about this unit, the box itself is worth more, maybe

Woah!!

Auction on this item just closed tonight. I stopped watching at $110. It sold for $750.00! Plus 15% hammer and 13% tax.
Maybe it did have 1 oz. gold.

Or maybe some people just thought that. I'm sure it's gold-plated at best.

The only interesting fact about this sale is why would anyone pay 1000 bucks for a pretty blue box, it is clearly a one sided plated advertisement sales piece, since HST was added clearly not bullion so the box must be the value !

But have you seen the pictures in the listing?

This piece looks like plastic (covered with goldish shiny layer) and inside (or below it) another part, probably more heavy (stone or plastic as well).

I don't see here even coin like metal round.

The box was not much to speak of - just an RCM box - not even really high quality cardboard. The paperweight felt metallic although perhaps it was hard plastic. Had a good weight to it though. Blue or black felt on the bottom and it seemed to be well finished. No COA or info that I could see about the piece itself.
I've put other feelers out on this piece to people that have seen a lot of oddball stuff and they are drawing blanks as well - so even if this is a rare piece unless you want to pay a premium for it (which someone did)then it's going to be hard to turn around and sell if that is the intent.
There were at least 3 bidders in on this item at over $600 . . .

Since you have seen this paperweight in hand and it is what it is, been to many auctions where the bidding fever takes over like a 200 dollar chain saw going for 600, but this is a 10 buck item going for a 1000 bucks, guess we are missing something.

Auction fever must be the explanation. I watch online auctions where standard bullion $50 1oz maple leaf coins regularly sell for $1,500US + buyers premium of 15-20% + shipping. I just don't get it... I can purchase a 1oz Gold Maple Leaf in half a dozen different stores plus banks here (Vancouver, BC) for market + small markup. Today, a GML is $1,670CDN or $1,310USD. Other than Auction fever, why would someone spend $1,800USD for a commodity that is only worth $1,310.

I'll try getting in touch with the auctioneer and see if he has any new insights.

I get the auction fever thing - seen it many a time when an item (e.g. 1/20 oz. gold maple leaf) goes for $30-50 over retail but unless there was actually gold in this paperweight it really went for a crazy price.

Maybe it had a hidden compartment with an actual gold coin
