I look for them in all my change but this year I have only found about 5-6, with 2-handshakes and mostly OIV. I also found a couple Wheaties two weeks ago and fewer and fewer State Quarters. Because I'm on the east coast a Denver Mint is scarce.

low mintage- 344,880,000 2004D Keelboat high mintage- 487,680,000 2005D American Bison
Going by those mint stats, none of the mintages are low and there should be plenty to go around. The most likely reason is exactly what you are doing- people are hoarding the Westward Journey nickels so their numbers as a group are lower than they should be.

This is what I think it was the last coin of the series and the some with DDO reverse and folks are just holding on to them for a while to see what happens with the value of the coin. I think you could have got the hole set from the US Mint catalog till mid 2007 or the end of 2006. plus its and great looking nickel I like it better than the or buffalo is not like the real buffalo it looks like a anorexic one to me. *Please don't take that the wrong way it just 1 man option.

Like most, I have also been saving every Westward Journey nickel I've come across. I'm about 2 nickels away from completing a roll of the Peace medal, I have filled about 2/3rds of a roll of the Keel boat, less than half a roll of the Bison nickels and about 1/3 rd on the Ocean in View. I live on the east coast, so I only see the Philadelphia issues. I have come across a few Denver mint nickels for the Ocean in View, Bison, and Peace medal. I see less of these now than when they came out.
I wonder what would happen if 10 years from now, all of us dumped our Westward Journey nickels into circulation?

I think these coins are being hoarded just like the 1975-1976 Bicentennial issues. Unlike the ten years and fifty varieties of Statehood Quarters, these nickels are a limited two-year four design run; many people incorrectly feel they are rare. I suspect that in about ten or fifteen years (assuming the metallic composition is not changed or the nickel is outright eliminated) we will see an abundance of them dumped back into circulation as we did with the bicentennial coins.

Fatcat161 & jbuck, Are you two looking for singles or trying to get a whole roll together? I probably have some singles and could probably make rolls the next time I get a box of nickels. -arthrene

I remember years ago, not being able to find a single Bicentennial quarter in circulation. Now, I find them more often than any Westward Journey nickel.

I've been hoarding the 2004 and 2005 nickels since they came out. Keelboat-P and ocean-P are the most the most plentiful while peace-medal-P and keelboat-D are the least. There also seem to be a lot of the buffaloes floating around -- I got 40 rolls of nickels from the bank to hunt through yesterday, and 10 of them appear to be uncirculated 2005 buffaloes. They are professionally wrapped and have a very shiny 2005 nickel at each end, many of them showing the buffalo. I don't know the mint (I can look and see if I can see it on the ones with Jefferson showing) and I can't guarantee the rolls contain nothing but buffaloes, but I've had these before and am willing to bet they are uncirculated rolls. So I didn't even open them. I'll be taking them back to the bank Tuesday unless I hear that somebody wants them. Jan

You might want to check the buffalos out for the "speared buffalo" with the die crack running down thru the buffalo. There are collectors who will buy these.

OK, I looked at one roll. No die breaks. And they are D's. To the bank they go. Jan

Elimist....... Quote: If you do hoard them, I assume it would be for investment purposes. So like, are we talking about them being worth a quarter in ten years or something like that? I am only missing one "P" mint for my "Westward Series" album, but I kind of agree with you with that question. Now, they ARE special and they ARE neat.....therefore that's enough reason to collect them, but as far as "future investment"......yeah....there's not going to be much here with these I don't believe. Putting together rolls is beyond what I'm willing to do.....but for those wanting to make this effort for a future, albeit small, premium....well....that's done with all kinds of modern coinage with "roll searchers".......so.
