What Conder101 said.

I would be all for it if the legislation said "stop printing the one dollar note." It does not, so I am meh.

Why can't the US Mint just give it a rest?

Don't blame the mint, they don't write this legislation. They just produce what they are told to. I would be very surprised if the Mint wanted this.

We can, however, have a lot of fun recommending famous inventors and inventions from the various states...

Texas - The Topsy Tail - Essentially an exaggerated, flexible plastic knitting needle, the topsy tail was invented by Dallas inventor Tomina Edmark.

People get so worked up over this. If they would just stop printing $1 bills, we'd all use $1 coins and life goes on. The only difference to me would be $500 in my change can when I go to the bank instead of $100. I was in Australia for months in 1985, barely a year after they eliminated paper dollars, and I can't recall a single person going on and on complaining about it. The stupid thing in the US is continuing to make both. Either switch or don't.
Rest in Peace

And this is why I rarely collect 21st century coinage.

There are exceptions.

I agree. No shocker.

Agreed here too, of course.

The bill states: 56-coin program with dollar reverses celebrating a significant innovation, an innovator, or a group of innovators within each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories.

How are they going to decide what to put on each coin? I suspect that some states will have many good things to choose from while others, I do not think would have that many good choices.

Typically it's been up to the Governor of each state to make recommendations. Some have appointed blue ribbon panels to make recommendations, done a poll or just pulled them out from thin air.

This is more the direction I'd like to see than having presidents on coins at all, at least.

Nope... coin is too small to show a meaningful portrait of the inventor and invention.

The weight issue has been proven by threads on this forum to be a very real concern and and actual contirbuter to people not wanting the coins.

How do so many other countries make it work then? It may be an actual concern for some people, but is a tenuous one at best.

Instead of dollar coins why not make the change with half dollars? They are big and I am sure the designs would look much better on a bigger coin.

Actually I wonder if the mint cares? Isn't it just another "order" for them to fill like in any business? I may not understand the system totally and would appreciate a correction, but from some quick reading I think it works like this:

1. Legislation passed for new coin
2. Mint makes coin while and profits from difference of actual metal values/production costs and the (alleged) value stamped onto the coin.
3. Profits go to the Treasury Dept.
4. Allegedly the profits are supposed to be a way of revenue for the government so taxpayers don't have to pay as much tax as they would without this profit.

Corrections please?

Maybe like other new designs they will solicit ideas and/or artwork from the public?

I think, like everything else, there is a lot of hidden history to be discovered with this project, if, since we are stuck with yet another boondoggle, they do it right. Some of those State Quarter designs were good and others were a tad...um...interesting.

The denizens in other countries apparently have better stamina than we do. Lay off the fast food, people.

It is not a concern, it is just being inefficient. If you have more than four one dollar coins at any one time you are doing it wrong and deserve the pain of heavy pockets.
