A shame for sure. I think John1 and moxking's posts are worth reviewing. I haven't kept anything in cardboard for 40 years.

My coins live where I live ... so I don't think environment is the issue. That said ... The zinc Lincolns, which were in Lighthouse 2 x 2s ... have a couple tiny green spots that I don't believe were there when I placed them in holders. Those came from circulation (in 2009) so there may have been a speck or 2 of contamination on them when I sealed them up in the holders.

Not all of my coins were as adversely affected.

Can somebody point me to a link to the self sealing holders just so I can see what we're talking about? Maybe I'm not thinking of the right thing... though I think I am. They're like the staple type ... but PSA type instead of having to staple them?

Moxking, Do you have pictures from before the coins went into the self adhesive and then pictures after 20 years to compare? I would love to see if there is any difference. I am not saying that I do not believe what you are saying, I just know my eyes see things totally different now than 20 years ago. I have always wanted to try the self adhesive 2x2 but I have heard negative comments about them just like the chemicals/glue used. Maybe I should revisit.
I use 2x2 with staples and then heavy 20 slot vinyl pages and I have never had any issues with any. I also use the 9 slot pages for my TPG coins.
After reading this post I am thinking of getting rid of my Dansco albums.
I learn so much from this forum, thank you to everyone who posts comments.

The staples make writing anything on the holder much more difficult.

I write on them beforehand while still laid out flat and before folding the 2X2 on its crease. The staple also is flattened on the back with a pair of pliers I use. I used to have a flat clinch stapler, but it broke and the staples I crimp are better (flatter) anyway.

Recently started to use a Brother label maker instead. Print and affix label, then staple/crimp. I like the looks of the labels.

I should be well fixed for staplers since, back when I ordered in the stuff to put up my set of mercs.. I accidentally ordered an extra stapler. I meant to order 2 boxes of staples and 1 stapler... and ordered 1 box of staples and 2 staplers instead....dummy.

Don't be so quick to blame the album. If the coin had contaminants or chemical compounds on its surface which were already causing the toning to occur as seen in your original photo, they would have continued to tone the coin once you placed it in an album. A very quick rinse with acetone or even distilled water can sometimes be enough to stop any further toning from progressing -- I do at least a quick acetone rinse and air dry on almost every non-copper coin I have before it goes into the Dansco. So far, toning has been minimal, except for a few coins which I purposely or otherwise did not rinse; those are developing a nice even gold/reddish tone.

Cardboard also is hit or miss based on the chemical composition of the paper.

By way of comparison, this 1984-D Jefferson nickel was put into a blue Whitman folder (by me!) when new, and I did not remove it and put it into a 2x2 until 2016. The toning is a light but noticeable bluish gold, more easily seen at the lower reverse.

A 1966 LMC from a Meghrig slide album, put there in 1966 (not by me!) -- this is what happened to the reverse after 50 years of cardboard on the back and plastic slide on the front. The reverse peripheral toning is pretty, but it ruined the center of the coin IMO.

Entirely possible...since some coins were not affected.

While sorting through this stuff and trying to make sense of my short term plan ... I lost an 1835 capped bust Half Dime. I tore the couch apart and didn't find the Half Dime, but I scored a 1941 merc... Not a good trade. I have to think that it will turn up....

Found it .... in a lighthouse 2x2 ... but not in the "hole" for the coin. It had slid off to the side so that looking at the holders from one side, you'd never see it, but viewed from the other side... plain as day...there it was.

I agree with paralyse. I am also someone who cracks out coins for the dansco. Every coin I crack out gets a little soak in acetone. I put a lot of toned coins in the album, and I havent seen any adverse effects.
Cant beat the look of a type set in an album

I have had nothing like this over the 20-33 years that most of my coins have been in Dansco albums.
