Quote: I've been using ebay a lot lately for auctions and for Buy It Now/Best Offer. I like sellers that offer free shipping. That is the extent of my ebay experience. I have yet to try an actual auction.

Some of the shops I've bought from over the years are defunct now. These days, there are just a couple of coin shops I patronize (in a city over 50 miles down the interstate) that are nationally known and deal in some very high end merchandise. That may be why the "chaff" they relegate to their "bargain" bins can be much better that anything you'd reasonably expect to find there. They seemingly just can't be bothered with the lesser stuff. So I keep dipping into that well. There are also coin shows in that same metropolitan area (local club events) that I can attend two or three times a year, and I usually find items there to spend my money on. Finally, there's a "local" jewelry shop (only about 20 miles away in the nearest town) from which I occasionally can get world silver coinage for or at just above melt. I haven't bothered with ebay for several years. I buy ancients from some Vcoins vendors I've found trustworthy. I did go to a country auction that was exclusively coins a few years back and did alright, but they've never had a second such event. Once in a while, I find things at yard sales, but usually only because I ask about any coins they might have. Swap meets and flea markets are pretty pathetic affairs in my region, although on rare occasions I've found some decent material at that sort of venue.

For purchases, mostly my LCS - been going to them for over 40 years (ever since I was a kid) and they're within a mile and a half of my home. Very occasionally shows and ebay. And I'm heavy into CRH. A good number of the AU/BU coins in my Jefferson nickel collections were found this way.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I guess I'm in the minority. I don't buy coins from ebay and I do not have a LCS nearby. I have obtained coins from Heritage and that was my main source up until a couple years ago when I got to know several online dealers. They have been getting some very nice material and I am comfortable with their descriptions (along with pics) so there are few surprises when I get the coin. I'm at the point now where I only buy original coins with nice eye appeal. There's so much to factor, in addition to originality, like strike, color, accurately graded, etc. TPG's have made it difficult because I have seen grade inflation and they are stabbing coins that lack these qualities.

On the auction side I have purchased many coins through Great Collections. Have also purchased from a local coin shop, antique shops, coin shows, and a few internet stores that I have been pleased with. Have also purchased a few slabbed coins through Amazon. Also have purchased from a few CCF members, always a great experience. I have not gotten up the courage to buy from ebay. Heard too many horror stories to be comfortable.

90% ebay8% other online venues 2% LCS I would love to have a LCS, or 2, who carried more than NCLT & decimals. I am a Colonial Token Hog, with secondary interest in OFEC, but after amassing 300 countries+ the LCS junk bins have little to offer. Done very well online. Confident I could recoup my investment 100%+ (since I've had a few 'steals' along the way). People either love or hate the 'bay... I've only been burned twice (selling) but never as a buyer ($500k in transactions over the 15 years)

To start my collection 30 years ago, it was circulation and my grandfather always giving us silver dollars on our birthdays. Back then, there was also a small section in The Bay (a Canadian department store like Sears) that sold coins and stamps. I was really young, about 5-6 years old, but I would spend all my birthday and holiday money there. Fast forward a few years and as a teenager I started buying loose coins on ebay. That is also when I got my first taste of slabbed coins from the auction site TeleTrade. I still remember I was working at a bottle cap factory as a summer job at 17 years old and I was spending all the money I earned on completely random coins from TeleTrade. That is why I have a few dozen slabbed Morgans and a Canadian gold sovereign. I didn't know what I was buying at the time...I just thought they were pretty and got completely caught up in the auctions. My 20s involved no coins because of constantly being told how nerdy it was. I was into computers as a kid right through to today, but coins are how I was nerdy. Enough teasing and I gave up the hobby. Now that I am in my mid-30s and don't care what people think, I have hit the ground running again and pulled the old collection out of storage! This time around I have more ability to research (the internet is a better tool than it was), patience, and money. I also have more focus and there is insane access to coins. In the past year and a half that I have been at it I have been able to complete parts of my old collection that sat with holes for years and expand my interests into other series. My main source for this round has been online coin stores, ebay, and iCollector auctions. I still have never been into a coin store in my life (other than the kiosk at The Bay) BUT I am going to my first coin show tomorrow, Torex in Toronto, so I am excited about that and not sure what to expect!

99.99% ebay (not counting roll searching). I don't specialize in any one series because I like them all. I've gotten many, many good deals on ebay. I know several people avoid ebay due to the scammers & counterfeits. I've only lost about $2.50 in return postage (that wouldn't even have happened nowadays) but have made thousands more than that off purchases made. I've only purchased from the mint once & still regret it because I can't seem to get it through their heads That I don't want catalogs with pictures of coins all over them coming to my house. Two local coin shops around here I primarily use for supplies & 2nd opinions on ebay purchases.

#1 - Regional Coin Shows (there are several held "monthly" in my area). #2 - Local Coin Shops #3 - ebay (mainly for "lower cost" coins). Michael
