Looks like a run of the mill rubber band stain. Rubber bands leach chemicals onto the surface that stain the coin unevenly across the contact surface, and cannot be removed without altering the surface.

That does look very possible, both from the shape of the stain and the little bits of rubbery goo on the coin. I wonder if there's a test for this because PCGS gave it a straight grade.

If this coin is for sale and you are considering buying it, it is a details coin in a straight holder. I would pay about 70% of the straight grade target price due to the damage. Who are you going to trust, a TPG' s grade in a holder or your own eyes?

It is a date I've been looking for and the obv is amazing. Still, I agree. Dropping down big bucks it's good to know what you're getting into. I'll watch it but, very likely, it'll go through the roof!

No reason to overpay for a flawed coin. This date appears to have high grade examples available, not out of line but also not cheap.

Thanks for the link. They don't have the 1821 but I'll keep it bookmarked.

Weird. I can see a stunning 1821 in stock. Can you search for sku 13392012 in the site?

Good advice. A problem regardless of the reason.

For some reason that streak doesn't bother me. I dislike fingerprints and carbon spots but that streak could be the result of anything. A rubber band streak is possible but it appears to have some dirt built up which would eliminate that. It's going on a 200 year old coinand I think anyone's guesses as to it's cause are just that...a guess.

Whatever it is, it ruins the entire coin's eye appeal IMO. It's a shame, because the obverse looks really nice.

Thanks, with this number I found it. It looks fine. Has a "complimentary" picture IMO but, yes, better than avg for this grade and, yes, it's pricy- more than 50% over FMV. Still, it's a possible in a field of none.
