Quote: It's like saying "I would love my wife more if she was dressed in clothes from this fashion designer rather than that one." That's not actually a terrible comparison considering that certain outfits will get someone more excited than others. My point was really more that it's a hassle to have to cross things like that, is it the primary concern not at all but still why even chance that you could get one less bid because of that

Quote: I'll never understand that kind of logic. It is a unique piece. It is the same coin no matter what plastic it is in. It's like saying "I would love my wife more if she was dressed in clothes from this fashion designer rather than that one." Your problem is looking for logic where cognitive bias is involved.

Who cares if the coin is in a different plastic holder? It's not the plastic that's rare and valuable, it's the coin.

For a coin like this who cares what plastic its in. Its a certified coin, you got a grade, and what the coin is. Move on with the PCGS vs NGC nonsense. Nobody is going to refuse this coin because of the holder.

Your problem is looking for logic where cognitive bias is involved. True, I keep forgetting that people, in general, are not logical. People preferring cognitive bias to logic rarely see they harm their own cause by digging a hole deeper and deeper. Lending a shovel makes the hole all the more obvious to newbies on the sidelines. And sometimes - if and when the hole gets big enough - the digger can see it also. Win win.

Do I think its completely idiotic that someone would let this coin pass because of the plastic its in? Absolutely, most others would likely agree to some extent. Does thinking thats idiotic mean it won't happen? Not at all. Who ever did buy it probably bought it for the coin itself and felt amazing at the discount he got. Now if He/She sent it to PCGS to reholder it they would probably make a serious profit at auction.

One thing a lot of people miss is anytime you buy something for over a million dollars you look at it as an investment to some extent. Those people didn't get rich just randomly chucking money around ignoring markets and preferences ect. There are a lot of strategies and various approaches that can be taken. Looking at those coins the same as a 50 dollar coin where the holder doesn't really matter ect is a mistake. The air is thin up there and it doesn't mean they aren't collectors or don't love their coins, but they aren't dumb

I do think however that there is still a good amount of meat for the buyer here, and am still confused on why others didn't go higher. Profit margin maybe .

Profit margin maybe I think there probably is some meat left for the winner in a private sale, I haven't seen who won it though if it was announced. I did see who won the nickel and that 54-S was resold basically same day so I do have some theories on the approaches some are taking with these auctions. All that said I see where guys that play at that level post on forums and just try and listen and learn. I probably won't ever know the behind the scenes, but I do know if I ever had a collection like that to sell it would be PCGS for grading without question
