Only once.
No one in my family has any interest in coins but I bought three Chicago Columbian Exposition half dollar coins for my mother to give to her grandchildren because her grandfather helped to build the exposition.

Yes. My wife helped our grandchildren build and decorate "treasure boxes". I give them older world coins, wheaties, some silver, Ikes, and so on every time I see them.
For family reunions they have a trading festival which sometimes gets out of hand. Our oldest granddaughter nearly crowned our youngest grandson when he dared handle her coins without permission.
A little war always increases the value of coins.

My two grandsons have received 5 oz ATB coins on their birthdays as well as at Christmas. I've also given them 1/10 oz. gold Eagles and 19th century gold quarter eagles. They're only 5 and 3 years old, so no enticement there to collect coins. My 5 year old grandson gets more excited when I give him a bunch of pocket change for his piggy bank.

Usually for Christmas, I have given immediate family either mint sets or an ASE from their birth year.

I used to give a proof set and a copy of the Red Book to lots of people for Christmas. After many years of doing this I found very few of the people I gave them to really cared at all about coins. One person just sold them as fast as they got them so I stopped doing that.

For Christmas this year I'm giving each of my grandkids ( I have 13) a proof set from the year they were born. I was buying one a month and doing really good until I came to the one born in 2012. Holy cow! I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy it for her and thank goodness she's the only one born that year.

My mum gave my sister and myself a gold coin each Christmas, over a period of ten years. Mum built her collection through her kids, because she knew that we were both active collectors. Shared interests and three way discussions were always lots of fun. Gave both of my kids some coins, about $5,000 in numismatic value each, as gifts out of my collection. Accelerated part of my Will. What they do with them, is entirely their choice. Over a period of time, they will get an equal market value of all of my collection, before I die. Not applicable in Australia, but it may be a good strategy to avoid inheritance taxes in other countries, as your kids become genuine and interested collectors. My two kids have become genuine and interested collectors. I became a gem facetor and a gem collector, as a direct gift from my dad, a decade before he died. Had lots of fun sharing his interests. I have a collection of about 300 faced gemstones, of a wide range of mineral types. He also gave me his old Mercedes. I am now an enthusiastic car classic club member.

I give coins to the grandkids for their birthdays. They have some nice coins. I did catch my 8 year granddaughter checking the dates on her pocket change.

Just gave my grand daughter a Whitman Album of Jefferson nickels from 1938 to 1964. Hopefully this will start her in coins.

Today gave my granddaughter an AU Peace dollar for her 12th birthday. Her eyes lit up at holding it.

I give a birth year ASE for new babies. All my nieces and nephews as well as my own 2 kids have gotten them from me.

My dad got my sister and I into collecting when I was around 9 years old by splitting up his collection of 1, 5, 10, and 25 cents (I got 1 and 10 cents). I took to collecting but my sister didn't. My grandparents gave me a number of mint products over the years. I returned to the hobby in a more serious way a few years ago. I plan on giving my two kids and three nephews and niece coins when they become old enough. Hopefully the collecting bug will stick to at least one of them.

For older family members (includes extended family) I recently began giving a Walking Liberty half dollar, minted the year they were born, as a birth day present. They all have been "tickled pink" with their coin! Gave a 1894 France "Lucky Angel" 20 Francs coin to a relative who's going to Aviation (flight school) school in the fall. No need to give a history lesson. It was well received. Especially by his mother who understood the symbolic significance. She even cried (in a good way).
