Okiecoiner ... I love it, they think you're being nice and eccentric but it's also a cheap way to tip!

I tip the bartender at my local pub with old 1, 2 and 5 dollar bills... he loves them

I know it wasn't that far back that some newspaper boxes in the GTA took 50c coins. Now you get a phone call at a pay phone for 50 cents. I doubt they take 1/2 dollar coins though.

In the 70s and early 80s I would ask for halves at Canadian banks while traveling in Canada. I started to carry a half in the banks with me b/c of the number of tellers I had to inform that,"Yes, Canada does make half dollars."

Gidgit: Unfortunately, about a year or so ago, they came out with new-style parking meters that won't take the 50 cent pieces as loonies. They still work in some, though .. never tried one in a vending machine.

I'm pretty sure using a 50c coin as a higher denomination is illegal. Or perhaps with the parking meter, it's a loop hole since you are inserting Canadian legal tender and it just happens to be counting it wrong. Although I'm sure it you deposited a roll of 50c coins at the bank, and they credited you as depositing a roll of twoonies, you'd say something... or not.

These are funny stories...
When we go to the restaurant, I always give the waitress a couple Nickel Dollars for a tip one day last week, I gave her 3 nickel dollars she looked at them for quite a while and, asked if they were real, I said yes they are real, she said...I'm going to keep them forever...lol

I've spent nickel dollars as tips without issue. Same as SHAFTA9a, they look at them at first and they get really excited when they find out they are real. Paper money is more hit and miss. I once created a real scene trying to spend 1954 twenties at an ikea. The cashier ran all kinds of tests, called the manager, people in line were trying to get a glimpse of what was going on. My girlfriend was mortified. I got a kick out of the whole thing.

That's because the meters are older than the General.

I spent nickel dollars on the Toronto Coin Expo admission for the second year in a row.

When people spend their nickel dollars, do you find that some folk think they are silver? I've experienced this before.

Many people still refer to 1968+ Nickel dollars as silver. I always get excited when people walk into the store and say they have 200 "silver" dollars at home..."What years are they?"..."Oh...."
