You may already know about this, but there's a great way to get Kennedy half dollars easily and with no fee: VEGAS! That's how I got the ones I have. It's unlikely that you live close enough to Vegas, but casinos in general are worth a try.

Quote: VEGAS!
We have 4 indian casinos north of me.....they are switching over to "tickets" instead of coins in the machines. But with the sensitive tech. stuff on these machines, I figured no silver coins would pass through there nowadays.......

I finally found a bank that had them and was only able to get $40 worth. Nothing special in there at all however. What is the average ratio you are finding 90% or 40% silver kennedys at?

There an trick you can use on dumping halfs and it dont involve banks. I do it all the time .
1. You drive an car and use gas. Use them all to buy gas . My record is 80 dollars worth at one gas station. Dont use you gas card or paper money to pay them. At 4 bucks per gallen in texas thats 8 halfs gone per gallen of gas. 2. Use them at fast food places or places you eat. Its easy to dump 5 to 20 dollars worth no problem to eat. 3. Safeway or food market stores. I buy food with them all the time no problem. 4. I even use at the feedstore where I buy my pigs 50 pound bags of food. They love geting my unwanted halfs. Since the clerk loves to give them at as change. She told me the peaple who get them as change thinks its an treat since very few companys give them at change. They love them and they laugh when they get them as change.
Just use them like you would use your credit card or papermoney all the time where you need dump them back into banks.
In searching halfs the trick is you dont want banks send back to fed banks where you will get back in another box you buy from the feds. It has happen me to me once or twice. I got my old halfs back in new wrappers and in new brand new boxs before. The more you push off on companys or peaple the more they will hoard them an remove them from circultion. I have seen clerks go nuts on wore out 71 thru 2001 junk clad halfs. They think they are gold and will buy them and hoard them thinking its gold or something. I seen lots clerks do that thinking they worth something.
The more you keep them out the banks hands and out the feds it beter when you search for coins. I still sometimes dump my halfs into bank machices mixed inside with dimes, pennys, nickels, quarters where bank dont freek out over on just half dollars. I just dump my one week on coin boxs I searched . I go buy another batch of coins from an secord bank .
Have fun chevrolet454ss

It's amazing the reaction you can get from a waiter or waitress when you use halves or Eisenhower dollars as a tip. Even if you aren't so happy with the service and leave a less than suitable tip, if they see a big fat Eisenhower their eyes light up. I've waited a couple minutes by the door before leaving just to see the reaction and the waitress took them to show a fellow co-worker. It was kinda neat actually. Mike

bibd, We have Casio's a few miles from me. I tried, but most machine are paper (ticket)and they don't carry much coin. Vegas might be a different story, as BIG as it is. I love that place, but its 2100 miles away. mfhorn

ALL, I have found another bank that SAYS they will not charge for ordering halves, regardless of how many. They may be saying that just to get my business. I realize it probably costs something to have these boxes deliveried to banks, but how much can it be? After all they have to get deliveries of other coin and currency. It sounds to me there is far tooooo much paperwork involved. Thats not our fault. In the meantime, I'm waiting to see what fees they want to charge before changing banks. Maybe we should all lobby the Federal Reserve for a place to get coins so we don't have to bother the POOR BANKS! mfhorn

Hi mfhorn!
I responded to your post in my nickel survey thread regarding looking for halves on I-75. Judging by your posts you must be in the Northern KY area. Are the half dollar boxes that you are getting square in shape and simply say "HALVES $500" (or "$500 HALVES" on them? If so you are probably getting them from Brinks, and likely from their Cincinnati facility. If you are located off I-71 down closer to Carrolton you might be getting them from Louisville. All of mine of late have been from Brinks Cincinnati (through 5/3rd) and they have been awful as far as silver is concerned. Last 15 boxes not one silver coin! Did find two doubled dies (73d and 74d) and one well circulated proof (1982s). I'm doing much better hitting smalltown banks for small numbers of rolls and loose coins. I dump mine at Chase; you have an account there and they have no problem. Spread out your dumps to different Chases to keep them from getting too angry!

Id exersize caution if your going to open a new bank account they run credit checks at some banks before opening a new account for someone and you might take a hit/lose a few points on your credit score witch could hurt you when you go to refi or anything that has to do with your credit !

Hi coppernickeldaddy, I am in No. Ky., 12 miles from the river. The boxes are square and I really didn't pay attention, but I think the boxes say '$500 HALVES'. They are wrapped in Brinks paper. The last three boxes I went thru, (1) had zero silver, but 8-9 2002's and up, (1) had 3 clad; and (1) had 35 clad, 3 90%, 2 Bens, 1 '74-D DDO, 1 '82-P no FG and a few nice MS various dates. So...there still out there. I agree with you that doing the smalltown banks does turn up some nice results. I've got loose bags with up to $750.00 face at different banks, because they had to have $1000 before they were allowed to ship. Of course most of these had been saving them for at least a year. Also with gas prices, one has to watch how far out you travel. It gets expensive. I'm going to Alabama over the 4th, so I plan on hitting a few along the way. Anyway.....Happy Hunting!

Why are the 2002's and up worth saving?I didn't see a premium for them?

Is there a premium for them or just something to save because they got into circulation?

The low mintage will make them scarce in the years to come. Just something to keep long term.
