The wreath doesn't match up to any 1 cent with the same bust. After I compared the leaves and berries to that of a detailed one...it matches. Any way to measure the diameter to finalize the conclusion?

I know my 18th century coins, and thats definitely a Flowing Hair quarter or half dollar from either 1794 or 95. Did you find that one metal detecting or something? -PP

It must be a half dollar considering no quarters where made with the flowing hair design. -PP

looking at the outline of the bust it could be the 1795 Jefferson head large cent. -PP

I see little hope of identification if the guys here can't even agree on whether it is copper or silver, lol.

Pennypusher, did you read my earlier comments? And since you know your 18th century coins so well, Which ones have the word cent in the middle of the reverse design and what flowing hair design has a Liberty cap and pole? (pole visible above the end of the bust.) :) Come on folks, grab your Redbooks, flip to the Half Cents and look at the picture of the 1797 1 over 1, then look at the picture of the obv and tell me if that isn't the upper 1 there by the lock of thehair.

just out of curiosity. How does a coin get that worn? Does it literally just circulate until it rubs all evidence of a picture off? I would have thought it would have become collectable and taken care of before that happened. Or were coins just not made out of stern stuff back then?
And what would that coin be worth?

Graceoutcast Right idea, just the wrong variety. Heads too low and the 1 is much too heavy and in the wrong place. Try this one. Note the 1 above the other 1.
