Not very good at grading, but I like that the "Liberty" is fully intact, it usually seem to be the first to go. Coin has been in a lot of pockets from the nicks on it... Very nice coin.

And for the shocker: PCGS graded her vf-35. I snatched her up last weekend. I'll post pics when she comes in.
The smudge on the right obverse field is on the holder, not the coin.

Thanks arrows and rays! It seems to good to be true to find a key date with xf details that may be undergraded. I would be surprised if PCGS made a mistake. Although a couple of others on a specialty forum had it pegged at xf-45 as well.

Looking forward to seeing this one inhand.

A nice well struck coin. If this coin was graded on strike alone it would have certainly graded higher. IMO PCGS did not care for the toning and subsequently the eye appeal thus costing the coin a grade.

Probably right, unfortunately. Sounds like the price was right though!

MikeF: How does the 1862 LSD look in hand? Can you post some photos? Thank you.

XF45 all day long. Lovely coin!

Yet another example where PCGS abandons their own objective grading standards, and 'market' grades - punishing darker toned coins. If this coin had a light cleaning with microscopic hairlines, removing the original patina, they would have given it XF45 or AU50

I've seen it over and over with the Barber halves.

Lovely coin, no matter what the holder says. Serious collectors of this series in mid grades looking for original surfaces usually buy the coin and not the holder.
