I agree with GrapeCollects, it is a counterstamp.

Whatever it is, it would only hurt the value in this case if it was otherwise uncirculated.

PMD
Short for post mint damage. Damage sustained after the coin was struck.

Probably not much more that its silver melt value, but there are counterstamp collectors who might give it a slight premium.

A little late to this thread, but just FYI that this coin is only 90% silver rather than being sterling (92.5%). The C/S may have been placed there to sell this coin at more than its actual melt value by an enterprising seller.

You could also post this here at the "Official Post a Counterstamp" thread:

Someone there may also have some specific knowledge about it.

I suppose it could also be a chop mark (which is a type of counterstamp).

That's actually called a hallmark, a stamp of purity.

.and if I could mention. There are collectors out there that collect counterstamps and hallmarks (fistfulladirt has a point this stamp being so small). Just a matter of matching the coin with the collector.

I collect Lincoln Cent counterstamps:

.and at the link I posted a couple of days ago you'll find the more traditional counterstamps some of which are very collectible. You should check out some of ExoGuy's specimens and research.
