Ahh, I'm speechless ! Your worried about authenticity ? Worry about how will they be able to tell if that is what you bought it as . I and many others would only pay melt for that coin if found in a junk box .
Hope I wasn't too harsh .

I can see the mintmark, doesn't look like a D. I can't make out the date.

Not to pile on, but I wouldn't have paid anything for this, much less a grading fee. At best it's in a details holder if not bagged.

I see the other post is locked, so I forgot to mention buy from reputable dealer that has been authenticated by 3rd party. NGC or PCGS to protect your investment.

I would not have touched this coin with a 50 foot pole. I only bought 1 1916 D so far and I bought it already graded. There are so many fakes or altered coins out there why would you buy it raw and in such crap condition? It is a details coin and is most likely not a genuine 1916 D coin. Hopefully you can return it and get your money back.

A coin on my wish list... my LCD is on the lookout for a low grade example that he can send to be certified and then have me buy... with this date, slabbed, sadly, is really the only way to go.

Wait a minute ; are you trying to say you don't need this coin for one of your Mercury dime Sets ?

Even if it is a 1916d Mercury dime it will come back as a details coin which will decrease its value.
