I know Carr strikes use non-existent dates; what I mean is that the overall quality of this Morgan dollar is similar to Mr. Carr's top line efforts.

Quote: The INITIAL startup of minting at San Fran was done with 10 dies shipped from Philadelphia in April of 1878. At "least" the first 10 coins were engraved. It is known that those first 10 coins, as well as some others, were given very special treatment -- the planchets were polished and smoothed, the dies were polished and compounded to mirror finishes, and each coin was struck at least twice, or possibly as many as four or five times. Messy, any idea how many days or weeks the San Francisco mint used the B1 reverse pairings before switching to B2 reverse pairings?

It wasn't long, but there was also likely some overlap between the B1 and B2 reverses.

Absolutely gorgeous. I've been following the thread ats on this piece, and all I can say is wow. Would love to see it in hand, although the true-views are most likely pretty accurate. Again, one of the coolest Morgans I've ever seen.

Hate to revive an old thread. Newbie here. Numismatic Student you stated the engraved piece might be considered the first one minted. Is there any material out there stating that? It would help me with something I'm working on.

Brian, Since the engraved coin (1878-S) came from the Eliasberg sale, David Bowers of Stack's/Bowers would be the other person to contact regarding the engraved coin. Michael Fey has confirmed the second VAM60 (NOT same coins as the engraved 1878-S). http://neilsberman.com/pdf/news_Mor...ens_7_07.pdfThe article with the entire VAM hunt story in CoinWorld: https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...ece.all.html John Roberts is the attributer for ANACS in Morgan & Peace dollar VAMs. This thread promised some big reveal at the ANA at the VAM meeting, I was not there so can't say what the talk about was, for some insight see this thread, 78-slongnock towards the end of page 3 describes it great. Proof? We need more research hope it gets out there. A really fascinating story for sure. I would also suggest you might contact Jeff Oxman (Founder of the SSDC) as he is the hands down authority on 1878 Morgan dollar varieties, though on the San Francisco minted ones, he would know of your best go-to person for research. His site is https://www.vamlink.com/. He's usually at the Long Beach shows since he lives near LA. I see you are with Minshull so you probably already know all the people I listed.

Thanks Dave! I had forgot to include the link (copy & paste fail on my part) to the VamWorld link, where I mentioned the user 78-SLongNock. DOH!

What characteristics are there that make it a specimen, instead of a PL or DMPL? Very nice coin.
