I think I remember hearing over a year ago ,that the double eagle ended up selling for about $6000.

I know this is a totally different collecting topic, BUT the same thing happens with collectors of antique railroad lanterns. I personally like them in original used condition. I just clean with mild soaps so I don't get soot all over myself. Spray down with a little WD40 to help keep rust/corrosion at bay.
BUT, many "collectors" and "antique dealers" will steel-wool them down to bare metal, or use chemicals to remove any paints. I have seen mirror-like lanterns and unless we are talking extra-special presentation lanterns, they were NEVER mirrors.
Unlike coins, though, it seems many people prefer this altering, which is what it is: ALTERING FROM ORIGINAL/CORRECT CONDITION.
Buffing a gold coin, and one that cost over $100k... that is just insanity...

By the way, there's a video on YouTube about the difference between YOU, CLEANING your coin, and sending it to an organization to get it conserved. The comments are pretty entertaining. I suspect a lot of the commenters have really nice, shiny coins in their collection.

That was a heartbreaking story. He pays $100,000 for the coin and then thinks that he can "improve" it. It's only worth the gold value now. I certainly wouldn't buy it, even if I had enough money to do so.

I should really share this video to some of the Facebook metal detecting groups I am a part of. There are a couple idiots that polish every single silver they dig. Dude polished up an 1872 CC dime and posted pictures about what a great job he did cleaning it and everything. Let me tell you he got slammed for it though.

I'll just say I got so tired of seeing this person polish all of his coins and have all these people, who actually had a clue, try and educate him. He didn't care, just kept polishing away, said he liked them better that way. We all tried to tell him that his kids will be disappointed with what the dealers tell them their inheritance is worth. Nope, next day a couple pics of some freshly polished barbers. I had to actually block this person because it was super frustrating to see. Some people can only learn the hard way, and unfortunately this person is going to maintain his ignorance throughout his lifetime.
