Quote: The value is in the remembrance of collecting each coin. While I enjoy the MS coins that I've purchased over the years, it's the circulation finds that I get the biggest kick out of. They're put into 2X2's with the date and place found. They may never increase beyond melt value, but I can remember the thrill of the find each time I look at them.

There is still a little pleasure finding one as they seem to be the only circulation find out there. I pluck one or two a week from the tills.

I like saving wheat cents. Even though they are not super valuable, they have history to them, and they look nice. You can't tell me that having a coffee can filled, or a box of rolls isn't a nice thing to have tucked away. I sure like having them.

With so many being melted all the time, you never really know what is left. Eventually even the common ones will be worth something.

Carl...do you know it's not legal to melt US copper pennies (cents) here in the states.

Doesn't mean people don't do it. I'm not saying they do, but I speculate someone somewhere is. That, or the government.

You know what would be cool?
A chart of each year of wheat, the mintage and the number each year that are lost for various reasons. Heck, I remember watching a buddy clean his car. He took all the pennies out of the center dash and dumped them in the trash. I almost needed therapy over it.
Such a chart could never exist but it would be cool to see where the numbers started and where they stand today.

The only coins I have thrown away are some severely corroded Zincolns that were not even spendable. Even in that shape, it felt totally wrong! I still have some of those, though, that I have not thrown in the trash. They're for "educational" purposes.

Quote: Common ones will not be worth more than the price of copper -- maybe less because there is a cost associated with melting them. This is why I highly doubt a melt; no profit incentive. The energy costs are prohibitive.
