Low demand right now = scarcity in the future? Are they going to climb in value over time?

Getting rid of the dollar bill would put more notice on dollar coins which would likely increase demand. At the same time, we're going more towards a cashless society. Coins are less of a part of people's lives, so I see coin collecting as a whole losing popularity. Look no further than proof set mintages to see the trend.

ok, sorry for putting this on a tangent, but what about the Hawaii State Quarter, that has a statue depicting King Kamehameha, so how does that work?

Recent history suggests the answer to both questions is "no".

I have two first release Sacagawea dollars, stuck by VIPs, with a total population estimated to be less than 1000. Paid less than $20 for each in original packaging.

I went back and looked at the statutes, and it appears you're misinterpreting. The legislation states no "head and shoulders portrait or bust" of anyone living or dead, and "no portrait of a living person" may be used.

That's a substantial difference. A "head and shoulders" portrait is what you see on the obverse of circulating coins (Washington, Lincoln, etc.). Those aren't allowed for anyone living or dead. The Hawaii quarter features a full portrait of King Kamehameha (in statue form). That is allowed because a) it's not a bust and b) the person is deceased.

The same rules apply to the innovation dollars.

What you're talking about here is a premium for provenance and/or special packaging. Typically, the supply/demand for this is very different (less/less) than the supply/demand for the coins themselves.

These restrictions did not apply to that series.

I thought that too, but the same kind of text appeared in the legislation authorizing the State Quarters: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg...5publ124.htm

"Prohibition on certain representations.--No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design of any quarter dollar under this subsection."

Interesting. I thought that would have been mentioned earlier.

I believe bzookaj has it correct - the depiction on the Hawaii Statehood Quarter is of a full body statue, not a bust/portrait/head+shoulders.

Anybody have any guesses about when we might actually start seeing some of the submitted designs going to the boards?

I am a relatively new collector but unfortunately I have to agree with Bret. Not sure millenials will care much about coins and the value of our sets and error coins may be very little in 30 to 40 years. Blah

TNG the S mint reverse proofs are limited to 75,000 of each design in reverse proof. That might be the lower mintage dollar coin collection you are looking for.

That's what I'm going to do. If it catches on, or if dollar coins become much more collectible down the road some time, those would be the hard versions to get of the series.
No guarantees of course.

I ordered the Delaware reverse proof today. It will be interesting to see how many of each reverse proof sells.
