This is an interesting question and something I have thought about from time to time. I have two young daughters and essentially one "special" (at least to me) coin. It has made me think about what I look to buy now in a different light. ""Should I be buying this?" I say to myself when looking at something at a shop or on ebay. It has made me really scale back on what I would call "impulse" buys and try to save towards another special piece.

This subject really irks me due to one big reason. My age and health. A few years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 Cancer and if you are informed that normally means by-by. I fooled them since I'm still here. Then there is this age stuff. I started collecting coins in the early 40's so I guess I'm really old and that also makes me think how soon my coins will go somewhere. Not many relatives left alive and from a small family. Lost most in WW2. One son in another state that if I go, he would probably not hear about it for months. A will is just so good but if your really worried you should look into what is called a living trust with an attorney. This will deminish any family fights over your possesions. Now as to my coins. I really have no idea what will happen to any of my stuff afterwards. Several old cars, other collections, all household items, etc. I may just have to come back as someone else to grab it all.

To just carl. Just a thought. Find an organization that would appreciate your collection as a collection and leave it to them when your time comes. If you don't designate it in a will the collection will be sread with the wind so to speak. Your name could live on forever engraved with the collection. Donated by Carl.... think about it.

Note that this subject has inspired a few other posts of the same type. Obviously, if nothing else, it shows that coin collectors worry more about their possesions after they are gone than other people. I know car collectors, gun collectors, etc and none of them ever bring this up.

Quote: I know car collectors, gun collectors, etc and none of them ever bring this up. IMHO, it is because most people know that cars, guns, and other collectibles are valuable, whereas they just see coins at face value.

Quote: it shows that coin collectors worry more about their possessions after they are gone than other people Couldn't disagree more !.......it's the "other people" that I want to have my coin collection......hence "a loved one".......family tree....family coin collection......273 future years and past generations contributing to this "collection". So, in fact, it's ALL ABOUT "PEOPLE". "My" "people....."My" blood family..... And I have a certain little 12 year old nephew, who will be an Eagle Scout someday by the way, who's VERY interested in coins (thanks to his Grandpa and Me) and will likely be the beneficiary of "two" collections. I have no children. My girlfriend has an almost 4 year old daughter who will inherit "some" things from me of course as a "stepdad" thing someday........But the Eaglefoot blood family tree must have and continue this, already 4th generation coin collection. It's not about the "value" of my collection.......it's the "family history" of the collection. The fact that my Great-Grandpa owned some of this stuff (and so on and so forth)......I imagine my "loved ones" and/or future generations of my family 200 years from now appreciating these efforts. This collection is NOT put together for "me" ......it's for THEM ! And I know A LOT of people who have their Great Grandfathers "GUNS" or Grandpa's GUNS or their Fathers GUNS...(example WWI or WWII guns brought back)..and they have a deep appreciation for the family history of owning these guns (antique or otherwise just special because of who they're from)......They hold them with GREAT REVERANCE BECAUSE OF THIS. And, moreover, they absolutely want their children to have them and respect them and NEVER sell them after they have left for the hereafter........ And so as far as being "selfish" with attitudes about "coins and guns" when it comes to "what happens to them when I die"........selfish ?........yeah....I'm really not seeing that in this respect. And don't think I won't hesitate to be buried WITH them....if it has to come to that...... .....I can and WILL take it with me if necessary !... Not a big proponent of "cremation" as Jbuck and family are. I don't want to be burnt to a cider and have some ashes in somebody's closet for 40 years until their thrown out by a future generation family member who didn't even know me. In fact, I already have my "plot" paid for in an area where generations of "both" sides of my family are buried.....and that's where I want to be as well.....my skeleton will be there for eternity or until that big asteroid hits Earth or the Lord comes back.....whichever first !.... And NO, I won't mention where this is just in case I DO HAVE TO BE BURIED WITH MY COINS !.....Some of you may be waiting with shovels 48 hours after they plant me !...

To Just Carl, I know it's tough when ya get to be our age - I'm not far behind you. I planed for my demise many years ago. I went to a local attorney and got a will drawn. I made him the executor. If you did this, he will contact those heirs. I just make sure he will be able to easily find them - current address list.
