I think the urge to collect has been engrained in humans since the beginning. Collecting coins, antiques, or classic cars is an extension of the hunter and gatherer mentality of our ancestors.

I have a small collection by accident. I was a kid before 1964, and ended up saving the silver coins I happened to have before they stopped minting silver coins. Then about 20+ years ago, I bought "junk silver coins" from a dealer for the bullion content, but I recently discovered that a bunch of the coins are more valuable than that, such as Barber dimes and quarters in decent condition.

I just started looking through these coins again, and ended up here to find out more.

I think as a kid (9-13) you either have an interest in coins or you DON'T . With me I was fascinated with wheat cents ,still am . So yes the interest of coins had been in me right from the beginning and will always be in me to the day I pass .

The history behind them and the challenge of the hunt to find those I like.

My story is the same as many others that I have heard. Interest when I was young, then forgotten, then re-ignited as an adult.

That happened to me with razors, too. I remember watching my dad shaving, and my mom took a photo of me using his razor after she had removed the blade.

I kept using old razors like that, and ended up as a moderator at a shaving forum where the main interest is older style (non-cartridge) razors - shavemyface.com.

Now it's a "thing," and small companies are making new versions of these old razors, such as the Supply injector razor or the Phoenix slant bar razors.

So my best bet for getting more coins might be swapping vintage razors for them. :)

We inherited my father-in-laws collection. I became interested in the coins and it has become a hobby for me now.

I got interested in coins from my grandmother when I was young. I recently got back into it after stumbling upon a few Mercury dimes I had left from my childhood collection. I fell back in love with the design so just today went to my first (small) coin show. So far have 56 of my slots filled in the Dansco.

I am infatuated with the history behind some coins. Not knowing who touched them or what they may have been used to purchase allows the mind to wander and create some fun ideas. The art work on many coins is striking :) I really enjoy collecting world coins.

As a criminal I like coins because no serial numbers for the police to track. No need to find a fence for stolen jewelry. Stealing cars takes up to much room and they too have those serial numbers. And remember when robbing a bank, they never put those die packs in with coins, only paper money. And too a person can always melt down all the coins they have in case the law is getting close.
Why do I collect coins? I really have no idea. Started when I was a kid and have been continuing for over 140 years now.

or - when one becomes too old and worn - hide them deep in the backyard to prepare an interesting hoard for a future coin collector
