I think that they should either make them out of silver or take them out of the silver proof set.

Yeah, and get rid of the cent and five cent too since they aren't silver.

Maybe the US Mint needs to license this patent for the dollars used in the Silver Proof Sets.

An alloy of about 4 to 10% gold, silver, copper, palladium, indium, zinc and boron producing an alloy with a pleasing yellow color. Tarnish resistance, wear resistance and heft are similar to 10 karat gold with a lesser cost due to the low gold content.

I wonder how much Palladium and Indium is in the alloy? They aren't exactly cheap. Palladium is less than gold but still over $300 an oz. Indium is ok, just around $30 per oz.

That alloy looks a bit difficult to make, given some of those metals in liquid state will vaporize others on that list

One way around that is to melt the lower melting point metals and then use them to DISSOLVE the higher melting point metals. Look at the copper and zinc that were used to strike the pre-1982 cents. The zinc boils before the elting point of copper, so they would melt the zinc and then slowly add the copper in smaller pieces dissolving them in the zinc. As the amount of copper in the metal solution rises you can start increasing the temperature and continue adding the copper until it is all melted without boiling out the zinc.

Aside from all of the other complaints, another thing that bothers me is that there is no "precious metal" version of the Presidential dollars. The Statehood Quarters had silver proofs available. When the SHQ series finally ends, the silver proof sets will have only three silver coins in it.

Jbuck, don't you remember? The National Park Quarters are coming out soon, so seven-piece silver proof sets are here to stay!

But it is not official... yet...

"The legislation is popular. It quickly passed in the House (July 9, 2008) and it now rests in the Senate. If (likely when) the Senate passes and the President signs it, five differently designed quarters would be released yearly starting in 2010." - http://www.parkquarters.com/

I hoped the concept would go away, but in the end you may be right. After all, it is an election year and this is the kind of legislation that makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy while obscuring the real issues!

Face it. They're coming. Or at least something else in their place....maybe enameled coins.

Conder, I knew there must be a trick to it!
That alloy doesn't look very economical to me.

AP Newswire: Washington--To soften the harsh realities of these difficult times, the US Mint has announced that future Presidential dollars will include portraits of various Muppets, Teletubbies, and Disney characters.

Where is my "warm and fuzzy"? I want it now. My soma supply is running out.

Just look at what the RCM is churning out. While some of their collector products are nice, others are simply Of course, I think the ensuing credit crunch will only dampen the collector craze.

I think very few citizens in this country even know about the U.S. Territory Quarters......let alone the Natl. Park deal....
So, yeah, Congress people will be the "only" people "warm & fuzzy" while they tend to that business ! The rest of the country will be dealing with reality and trying to pay their bills and afford life here in the United States, while Congress sees to it that we'll all have some shiny new quarters to see and be proud of.......

Shut the borders down.......stop all immigration, we're full now......and get us out of debt !!........that should be the business of the country......not a new purty quarter !

Yeah, I half meant it as a joke, like Congress acutually cares if We the People feel warm and fuzzy.

We are hardly "full" since we only rank number 180 for population density.
And it if were not for immigration, only 1/64 of my DNA would be here!

We used immigration in the past to "build" this country.....now it's "built".

And yes, we are "full" ! Here in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Oklahoma, etc. etc........the "towns" are ever expanding. Where there used to be "farmland" is now a shopping mall ! Where there used to be "farmland" is now a "suburb" ! Etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
We are losing top soil and farmland acreage drastically every year.
And we are using our country's resources too fast in trying to support our population......cutting down the forests and building new suburbs and factories and expanding and expanding and putting more pollution into the air and water.
Also, the great underground resevoir of water under the "Great Plains" is nearly 70% depleted !
At some point, not only will we not be able to feed "the world" but we won't be able to feed "ourselves" !
Do you want us to be as crowded and populous as India ? China ? Any other population density areas ?
No !....WE WANT FREE OPEN AIR PLACES, WILDERNESS, AND BIG SKY COUNTRY !......."rural" areas are very important to this country and they're constantly "shrinking" !
So, to preserve THAT.......YES !......WE'RE FULL NOW ! ABSOLUTELY !
The consumption will overtake the resource and bounty of this country eventually. And look at the trash that people create with "dumps" and the like......flushing toilets, drinking water, eating, using, taking, and building, etc. etc.
It will be "self-evident" to everyone eventually in our rivers, lakes, oceans, and "the land" will just cease to support the population ...........
We're only 180th on the density chart ?
Well, yeah, and look at the "world" and it's resources and the "world population" being higher than it ever has been in the HISTORY OF EARTH !.....Look at the Amazon Rain Forest which supplies us with oxygen !
This is the direction we should "welcome" or "encourage" or "embrace" ?...........huh ?

I don't think they should be included in the silver proof set. They should include the Sacagawea dollar but make it from 90% silver, the size of the older silver dollars, and with a reeded edge.

Also, the nickel should be made from pure nickel and the penny from pure copper. Why does anybody need a second proof nickel and penny too?

The Mint does not have the authority to do that. The Sackies, nickels, and cents cannot be altered in size or composition without Congressional legislation= never gonna happen.
