I am kind of leaning towards a type set. Higher grade common date or lower grade key or semi key date?

I would not recommend upgrading unless low grade really bothers you. The reason being you end up losing money on upgrades and that can be spent getting coins you don't have yet!
If I were you I would keep going back in time and put together a date set of large cents.

JBuck, love your passion for the Ike dollars! :) I'm leaning towards type set collecting. Costs for key dates in a variety of the date and mint mark sets are out of my budget (e.g. 1916 D Mercury, 1932-D Washington quarter, 1934-S Peace, etc.). Edited by txgolfer56

I'm one for focus - upgrading or just adding is GREAT! I have a binder page full of 1909 VDB Lincolns from G to MS. Why? Because I like them all. One of the reasons I don't like albums, they only hold one of each which forces you into thinking only need one to fill the hole. BAH! Here's a few, I created a grade set + extras (no pics). A long time ago I finished my LWC set. I then started to upgrade coin after coin. As I found better coins, I put the old ones in 2x2 flips. Eventually I had so many in those flips, I started a second set with those. I then started to further upgrade set #1 which also upgraded set #2 and started a new pile of coins in the 2x2 flip box. This system has now grown to 10 completed sets of those things. Just to many. |

I feel like expanding into new collections is so much fun because there is so much to be learned about each series. Also, I've just recently jumped into merc dimes and Buffalo nickels while simultaneously upgrading my humble LWC collection. Still have a few F/low VF grades that I can upgrade as I work out deals and trades t fill holes in my two newer albums. You can have both - album upgrade fixation AND new collection syndrome! |

I am not really into doing upgrades. "If you have the time to do it twice, you had the time to do it right the first time." Once in, always in. I am not above doing a second set though. I am working on my second Ike set now, going for higher grades and in TPG slabs (whereas the first set is Dansco). |

I think you would enjoy putting together a type set. I have been working on mine on and off for 15 plus years.

I'm thinking of focusing on a type set for coin series in existence for 1900 forward first. Then go back to 1800 forward. Will skip the gold coins for now as they are a bit too pricey.
