A main branch... hmm. Not sure. The one I go to is a pretty big branch... I order them from Bank of America. I should ask them about it.

So bags have more likely been searched over already. Has anyone here had any luck finding anything good in a bag of halves?

Find a small local bank. Cripes! Bank of America is huge!

A bank that has 10 or so branches would be a better bet IMHO.

Generally a lot more friendly as well. Buy what they have and then turn in your "residuals" to BOA.

Big banks ain't all that good. Make them work.

Great advice. I'll take all the advice I can get- I'm really new at roll searching and banking to boot.

Should I call up all the local, smaller banks and just see if they have any halves, and scoop them up?

My bank does bags but it is in a different format, they are plastic bags that are sealed and ready to be sent to the main branch. The bank I go to does not order in any coins because of how much is turned into them, I am a little shocked because they do not have a counter and everything has to rolled by hand, but they always have something on hand. I try to get a $50 bag of cents every couple of months but can not afford to move up at this point. I will have to ask and see if they do carry other denominations because I have found some nice things so far and would love to go through nickels and halves from there.

I would think that most bags are filled by counting machines that would reject the silver coins. This would make the bags less successful than than the boxes that often have customer wrapped rolls.

In this situation, I think Fed Boxes or bank wrapped/customer wrapped would be the better way over this "bag".......
I've received a large heavy duty "plastic" bag before (found nuthin')
But never a "gunny sack" looking thing !.......and anyway your "silver finds" from it are probably proof enough right ?...

Yeah, you guys are absolutely right. I didn't think about how those are probably the coins that go through the counting machines.

Going to open up a SunTrust account today, they'll let me order boxes of halves, with rolls in them. Which is what I want.

Bags from a bank are a great idea if they have them over boxes of rolls. Boxes of rolls are usually made up from those bags by a company that runs them through a rolling machine so just one more machine the coins go through. I've had fantastic luck with bags but usually from older banks. What some banks do is take a few bags of coins and put them in the vault for a just in case they need coins. Some older banks have had those for many, many years just sitting there. In bags of Nickels I've been able to fill Albums completely of Jefferson and many Indian Heads. Unfortuanately the older bank I was getting this from is now closed due to a merger. Always try for a bag at an older bank just in case they are bags sitting in a corner for many years.

Excellent advice, just carl. I never did think of that- just one more machine the coins go through. It's a terrible shame everything in my area is so new- no more than 20-25 years old. I'd be hard pressed to find a bank older than that... maybe I should try downtown Tampa sometime I'm over in that direction.

One thing to consider though, is that now, more than ever before, SILVER HUNTING has become an insane massively popular sport.......so any "bags" that you might find, may likely be "dump station" halves that the bank puts into bags that are getting ready to be "sent off". And they've already been looked through and brought in and run through the counting machines........hence the "bags".
But you know.....NOTHING is 100% when it comes to silver huntin'......you can get lucky in just about any form you choose to seek them out......IMHO.

It makes no difference whether the coins come in bags or boxes. Armored services and the FED store coins in both bags and boxes. The only difference is that Armored cash services charge banks a little more for rolled coins versus bags. Most banks now do not carry alot of cash or coin because it is too much of a liability, so whenever they need something they just order from the armored car company through which they have an account. If the armored car service doesn't have something in stock then they get it from another bank during a "swap." Banks and armored car services usuually do not like to order from the FED because of the costs associated with this. I used to order cash/coin on a daily basis from an armored service for a bank I work at, and when ordering coin you always have the option of ordering bags or rolled coins. Also, some of the larger banks have their own rolling machines so they order bags to cut down on the cost of rolled coin. But, all in all, it makes no difference whether it is bagged or rolled, you can find silver either way.

Hmm... these are all very interesting perspectives. Thanks eaglefoot and Silver Eagle.

Now the only question that remains is... has anyone here had any great luck with bags as I've heard they've had with rolls?
