I'm blind so explain it like I'm five. What are the differences? Either I need glasses or I'm an imbecile!

The shapes of the mintmarks have a different fonts. Just like different fonts we use on documents, the shapes of the designs are different. Look at the shapes of the upper and lower serifs (the NW corner and the SW corners) the punch that adds the mintmarks to the dies are different.

On MM 12 the top and bottom on the left hang over equally, and on MM 11 the the top is shorter? On EVs' coin it looks like MM 11 to me? Please explain more, thanks. John1

That looks to me like the MMS-011. The thickness of the devise makes me believe that. Here is a pic of an actual MMS-012. It took me a while to differentiate the two. Compare the two side by side and you can see the difference in overall size. Also the MMS-011 is thicker from the field to the top of the devise. Another way to tell the two is on the inside of the devise itself, on the MMS-011 the inside of the devise curses inward, on the MMS-012 there is no curving inward, it is flat.

Below are two mintmarks from different 1987 Denver cents. Are the same style or different?

I am going to try to get a better picture of that area tomorrow, since the picture has a ton of glare.

The two are the same style. Both are MMS-0011 (Large serif on the bottom) The MMS-012 has the large serif on the top.

Good post, it got me looking at my 87Ds. I agree that this one looks like the 11. I've only looked at a few and found this one with an odd mint mark. And e&v if I find a definitive one you can have it. It will be bu!

It also looks like the mintmark was enlarged, but not enough to create a spread. So it is not a RPM.
