The coin is damaged, not a mint error.

Actually, it's this coin and this entire thread was a test which everyone basically failed. PCGS graded and sold on Heritage for $104 back in 2018. [begin rant] The structure of this forum needs to be rethought. People come here with grainy, unfocused and incomplete photos of their coins and otherwise very talented and knowledgeable posters (like boon, in particular) are asked to evaluate these coins based on horrendously inadequate info. It's unfair to everyone involved. Had this thread been deleted or paused for having "improper photos" and "not enough data/information provided" and the poster been directed to upload proper photos and information before replies are submitted, he might not have been advised to throw away a pretty decent coin. There's has got to be a way to improve here. In the meantime, be careful what you call PMD. Without adequate data your 'years of experience' are utterly useless. Better to just stay silent if you aren't 100% sure what you're looking at. [end rant]

I get your point but the back and forth is part of the fun. Plus free advice is usually worth what you pay for it!

Quote: Better to just stay silent if you aren't 100% sure what you're looking at. Hogwash. You can only sometimes be 100% sure when you have the coin in your hand. You can almost never be 100% sure from pictures on the internet. Quote: There's has got to be a way to improve here. Yes, we start by getting rid of people that have 2 active accounts so they can just deliberately screw with people with obscure coins.

With respect, I do believe that the CCF members that worked on this one deserve some credit here, because they did ask for an edge picture. Twice. A lot of the members here, even without sufficient data will do their best to help, even if they get something wrong every once in a While. We are humans, and humans make mistakes. -CH27

Quote: The structure of this forum needs to be rethought. I disagree - politely suggest that the motivations of some newer members should be considered. The CCF is a long standing, family friendly forum filled with true experts across a broad range of numismatic topics. Sooo - a new member with 6 posts shows us some photos - then claims we 'failed the test' I say that new member can go hang his/her hat wherever else they believe the true experts contribute.

Dandaman - I don't mind a tricky challenge, but I do mind a know-it-all newbie. Your tone is distinctly lacking in grace and respect.

I thought it could be a adjustment strike, but there's hardly anyway to really tell without coin in hand.
IMO this forum is one of the best with many knowledgeable contributors, since OP didn't provide the edge picture as requested, it helps in determining other than a damaged coin.

I'm usually a lurker here. I read a lot and have learned a tremendous amount from so many members. I thank you all. With that said, too many have suggested it's "a throw back" "a spender" with so many coins. I'm no expert and keep my views to myself. With this coin I was wrong. With the poor pics I thought it was a struck through capped die. OP was asked twice for an edge shot and once for the weight. He was also asked if the coin was thinner than normal. All questions to help determine what was going on with this coin. There's blame all around here. I've seen so many threads that the "experts" tell the OP to spend a coin and I cringe. Last week was a mule die clash. Another (year's ago) was I believe a 77 silver Kennedy and most of the suggestions would have certainly greatly diminished the value of that coin. Please in the future, lurk, unless you really know what's going on with the coin. If your opinion is speculation and not a fact let it be known. Don't be so quick to tell someone to pitch it. Thank you all again for your knowledge and willingness to share it.

Haven't posted in a while, but do visit almost daily. While most question Dandaman99's motivation, etc., the way this conversation played out is rather interesting--with perhaps, a useful takeaway or two as we all move forward.

This message is for Dandaman99 if you happen to be still around. I have posted "test questions" before but I make it known from the start. The questions were intend to help new comers. I would never have thought to come into a forum and try to "trick" long standing members. I hope you were one of the people bobby131313 mentioned when he said. Quote: Yes, we start by getting rid of people that have 2 active accounts so they can just deliberately screw with people with obscure coins.
Have a nice life.

Quote: You failed to post an edge picture when asked twice ....and yet a determination about the coin was made. My point stands. If submissions contain insubstantial or improper information, determinations should be made with caution.
