Might just be a well worn coin if it is silver. Maybe you can take it to a coin shop if there is one close to you.

It looks like a Roosevelt dime. Take a regular dime and this one, and alternately spin them on the counter and let them settle. Compare the sound. If it is silver, it will have a higher ring to the sound.

The coin is damaged, not a mint error.

Actually, it's this coin and this entire thread was a test which everyone basically failed. PCGS graded and sold on Heritage for $104 back in 2018. [begin rant] The structure of this forum needs to be rethought. People come here with grainy, unfocused and incomplete photos of their coins and otherwise very talented and knowledgeable posters (like boon, in particular) are asked to evaluate these coins based on horrendously inadequate info. It's unfair to everyone involved. Had this thread been deleted or paused for having "improper photos" and "not enough data/information provided" and the poster been directed to upload proper photos and information before replies are submitted, he might not have been advised to throw away a pretty decent coin. There's has got to be a way to improve here. In the meantime, be careful what you call PMD. Without adequate data your 'years of experience' are utterly useless. Better to just stay silent if you aren't 100% sure what you're looking at. [end rant]

I get your point but the back and forth is part of the fun. Plus free advice is usually worth what you pay for it!

Quote: Actually, it's this coin and this entire thread was a test which everyone basically failed. You failed to post an edge picture when asked twice, so your test is absolute garbage. Quote: Better to just stay silent if you aren't 100% sure what you're looking at. Hogwash. You can only sometimes be 100% sure when you have the coin in your hand. You can almost never be 100% sure from pictures on the internet. Quote: There's has got to be a way to improve here. Yes, we start by getting rid of people that have 2 active accounts so they can just deliberately screw with people with obscure coins.

With respect, I do believe that the CCF members that worked on this one deserve some credit here, because they did ask for an edge picture. Twice. A lot of the members here, even without sufficient data will do their best to help, even if they get something wrong every once in a While. We are humans, and humans make mistakes. -CH27

Quote: The structure of this forum needs to be rethought. I disagree - politely suggest that the motivations of some newer members should be considered. The CCF is a long standing, family friendly forum filled with true experts across a broad range of numismatic topics. Sooo - a new member with 6 posts shows us some photos - then claims we 'failed the test' I say that new member can go hang his/her hat wherever else they believe the true experts contribute.

Dandaman - I don't mind a tricky challenge, but I do mind a know-it-all newbie. Your tone is distinctly lacking in grace and respect.
