Just another example of exactly why some coin dealers get a bad name and a bad reputation!

Your coin is worth much more than "common" as it has the full date on it. That in itself means a lot!

Definitely worth slabbing and holding on to in my opinion!

Nice find (or pickup)!

I wouln't slab it. It is obvious what it is. If you have it slabbed, will it be worth more? No. It is what it is. Keep it save without finger prints.

To CCF! Very nice Off Center Strike! What you local coin dealer said is very incorrect. It's not very common. It's pretty rare actually.

Totally cool. Awesome it has the date! Many off-centers have it cut out.

@mjy, I agree that you have a very nice pick-up. Also, I would like to point out that for your very first post, your pictures are way above average--nicely done!

Do you mind me asking how you got it? I can't imagine it was in pocket change.

Nice coin! It's nice to have the date still showing as well.

So I'll ask the obvious question to collectors of this sort of thing - what would be an approximate value?

Good question @frog. Not being much of a collector of these, I did a little research.

In looking at sold items on ebay, I can find two quarters that are exhibit similar, but not quite so dramatic offset. A 70% offset with no date sold for $32.03 and an 80% offset '65 sold for $80. The OP's coin seems to be more offset than both of these examples. Additionally, a 90% offset quarter with enough remnant digits to confirm it is a '99 sold for $44.35.

He obviously down played it, was blatantly dishonest or just plan not knowledgeable! Wouldn't be surprised if he offered you $2.00 for it! Always get a second or third opinion. Good thing you came here. Very nice find! !

Thanks everyone for the welcome and all the information.

Spence, to answer your question, I worked as a teller when I was still young in 1999. This quarter came through my till and I got permission to exchange a regular quarter for it. I've had it in my coin collection in a safe ever since.
