I'm going to say the gash on Lincoln's cheek only limited it to 66RD. The reverse is easy 67RD.

I would have just had the coin reholderd for a small fee . Would have cost you less than what you paid for NOVUS #1,2 and 3

I did not know that! Thanks T-BOP.

One of the questions I had was about the dint on the cheek bone. From the Red Book, "At MS-65 and higher ... no contact marks are visible except under magnification." I cannot see the ding without magnification (with my glasses on), so I was thinking it's a factor in terms of eye appeal, but not grading.

I also wondered if it's RB or RD. Again from the Red Book, "Coins with full or nearly full mint orange-red color can be designated RD; ...."

I agree that the reverse is particularly nice and definitely MS-67. I was thinking 65/66 for the obverse, with an overall grade of MS-66-RD.

NGC's grade is MS-67-RD, which I thought was (is) a bit of a stretch.

I'm selling the coin on ebay currently, so we'll see what the free market concludes. I am very honest and thorough in my ebay listings, which tends to yield lower sales prices, but I sleep well at night.

Thanks so much for your responses!

Mark

P.S. On a completely unrelated, but interesting topic, I was intrigued by Spruett's Lucretius quote in his signature. I did a little searching around, summarized in a post I made at StackExchange/Latin-Language. A really smart person responded to my question about the proper translation of Lucretius' words into English. https://latin.stackexchange.com/que...noredirect=1

It's all about eye appeal, look at those frosty fields, the devices are very clean. Those little marks on the portrait are nothing, it's just some strike weakness and a small hit on the cheek.

RB designation would be from 5% to 90% red on both sides

RD designation would be 95% to 100% red on both sides
