What is key to getting hands on rare items?

Lucky to be in the right place at the right time . No rare coin is just going to fall into your lap unless you are experienced enough to cherry pick a rare error coin from a junk box or you come across someone dumping their collection .

Enjoy the small common finds. If not , then putting it the time that it takes to make a nice score will become a bit bothersome to say the least.

(1) Knowledge: read everything you can get your hands on about the various coins you are collecting. It will help so much.
(2) Be patient: Whether it is stopping to research a coin before you buy it or taking the time to take a quality pic of a coin your posting for sale, don't be in a rush.
(3) Be willing to make mistakes: You will learn a lot from your mistakes .... I know I have.
(4) Have fun: If it ain't fun, you're doing something wrong.

Agree, KNOWLEDGE is the key to collecting success and enjoyment. Buy the books, go to shops and shows, and learn, learn, learn before you buy.

Know what you're looking for. Educate yourself. Focus on what interests you. Luckily, most of your answers will be a google search away. Search the internet and this forum before asking your questions. Chances are you'll find it there first. If not, ask the question here.

A lot of fantastic information provided by the members. Another thing to add to the list is frequency. Just like playing the lotto, the more you play, the better your odds are at winning. I tell this to a lot of folks who get into coin roll hunting to jumpstart the treasure hunting. The more you search, the better your odds are at finding some of the good stuff.

Good info here!

What helped me is actually seeing examples - there are TONS of images on this site to be used as reference. Become an expert on whatever you're looking for.

Funny. I have a set of videos entitled "Coin Fishin': What to keep, what to toss back." It is on you tube. Note my signature line below this post? See the number 1-5 on that area. Each segment has a title. They are in about 20 minute segments. (2 hours total almost 1,000 images) They are titled. It is a ball park idea of what to look for when collecting. Just look below:

Read the book...search...read the book again...search...re-read the book for a third time...search. I've been at this for over 50years and I still get educated.

You can take one thing to the bank. You could be a career professional numismatist for several lifetimes and not know it all.
