The 1909 is pretty surprising! I can only guess hoarded cents are re-entering circulation. Nice finds!  |

I actually picked up a box of pennies from my bank today also, last second decision. In all, I found 21 Wheaties, the oldest being a 1916.

I think you've got solid VF details on the obverse... I also think it's been cleaned at some point... but for only paying a cent you definitely got a bargain.

If that 1909 weren't harshly cleaned it would grade VF25 by details alone. As it is I wouldn't expect over VG money for it....still over $10.

Man, you really got lucky. That's a helluv a haul in variety.
Put that 1909 in a window sill for a few months. It might retone.

Thad......What do you think a cedar jewelry box would do to different coins.....short term and/or long term......good idea or not ? I'm not really WANTING to purposely try to "tone" any coin.......just keep some extra coins in there..... common dates......different denominations........kind of a "mixed box of coins"...... Of course I realize corrosion from different metals and humid air could be cancerous.......but I'm talking like cheaper World coins, No Date Buffalo nickels, some junk silver, etc. etc. So, first, would you say "no" ?.......then, second, if "yes", which kinds of "cheap coins" would be fine and which ones would you advise against doing so ?, and third, which ones should not be stored together ? I keep most all of my coins in 2x2's, ziplock bags for Wheat Cents and War Nickels, albums, folders, coin tubes, etc.....and all of that goes to the safety deposit box. etc. etc. But Dang it !.....I've had this empty neat little cedar-wood jewelry box, with a beautiful portrait of wolves on the lid, that I bought in Mammoth Cave Kentucky, and I've had it for 12-15 years now.......and I'm just so curious what would happen if I used it for storage of coins !....(cheaper common coins, of course !) Having it just sit there empty is killing me !Edited by eaglefoot

Nice finds in the search. My last 3 $25.00 boxes yielded only a few wheats but always 20% copper. nlp

eaglefoot - I don't recommend storing coins in there. Most woods contain resins that are acidic in nature. More than likely, you'll end up with some damaged coins. Also, wood tends to hold moisture, and we all know that's bad for coins.
I also do not recommend mixing coins. That can also possibly lead to bimetallic corrosion due to a galvanic effect. You can google those terms so I don't have to explain.

I guess I knew the answers to those questions.....but just needed to be "told" to quelch my desire to put something in there !! Hmmmmmm......guess I could just continue to keep air in there.....
