Thank you for the roller / wheel marks explanation!

So, it will be hard to find a coin without these marks, I'd presume. And that any grading submission of such would come back as UNC Details Wheel Marks.

Behind the upper ear does look like die damage to me, like a die dent. It don't mimic anything like a hub to me. But the doubled ear looks legit to me.

I retract my opinion. I did not know Mr. Wexler has already determined it is a double die.

I Found This 2018 D today. It has a doubled earlobe, all letters in LIBERTY, Date and the Mint Mark.

Cointech, I fail to see any type of doubling. Better pics without glade will help tremendously. You might wanna start your own thread!

Cheers, R2018

I agree with Rookie2018. Not seeing anything at all with those pictures, just a ton of glare.

Just a heads up on the parallel lines through the hair on the OP's coin.

These are roller lines from rolling out the metal into sheets, not wheel marks from a coin counting machine. If you look closely you will usually see many areas where these lines are visible. The reason the lines are visible is because the metal doesn't completely fill the design on some of the deeper areas of the die, such as the hair. If the die doesn't compress the metal during the strike any anomalies on the surface of the planchet will remain.

Hope this helps with those striations from the roller lines.

Dr. Wiles currently should have my 2018-D with the doubled ear. I will post a thread with his comments once he gets it looked at and I hear something. Should be soon as he rarely takes very long to look at coins.

The link on the homepage isn't working yet but the 2018-D doubled ear is now listed as DDO-001 on VV.

Congrats TB and everyone else who has found this variety!

Thanks! I still haven't heard anything from Wiles about it and only learned that it had been listed thanks to Tanman's posts. I will still do a separate thread on it once I get it back with any comments he made about it. I suspect that will be soon, but there were other coins with that submission so might be something taking longer to work out in the mix.
