Wow. Ok. Glad I asked. Not what I expected. So let me follow up with a couple more questions: 1. Not worth grading...because of toning location? 2. Wear, though I seen way worse do ok? 3. The PIDT noted? Never knew that one. Do now. And I see it. Nice. No, I did not try acetone. Never done that one. I know what it is. But at moment I see no reason to remove. No grading. It looks very cool. Leave it. G-kids will like. I got them hooked. . Only asking why no grading, to store info in the data banks of my brain housing group. Not doubting the coin brethren here. Again, glad I asked. Thx all.

It's a stain from improper rinse and dry after a dipping.

What does it cost to send a coin in for grading ? I'm sure it's much more than the value of the coin in the first place. How would anyone ever recoup the cost ?

@eagle. Dipping stain. Never would have thought that. Cause I have zero experience at dipping. Interesting. Going to put under microscope for fun. See what is there. Maybe compare some pics I may find on line. If I find anything interesting I will post.

You need a 66 Red to make submission a good idea. This won't make 64. And I agree with IGE - dipped and improperly washed afterwards.

After this thread, I'm just going to melt it for copper value. That's about what I paid for it.

Going to give to my grand daughter. She's 4. Going on 33. lol She loves coins now to. Got her and my daughter going (a nurse) lol. But she gave me one of her two coins last visit. "Here Ah-Pa. For you." Heart warming for sure. Stays next to my computer forever now. Below is a picture of coin she gave me. We each have one now. I wish it was real

@Sarge...yea, I have checked out prices across the board for PCGS and NGC. Appreciate the heads up. For anyone who may want to take a crack at it. First time I really looked close at this coin. I added a bunch of pictures, in different lighting, angles, etc.. You can clearly see in a few a YELLOWISH, sulfur like substance/look where that stain is. What I am trying to find out is what kind of dipping solution would cause that? Lots of views to help in that effort. Also, I think the reverse has some evidence of the same thing, though more subtle. Lastly...I am not in any way trying to convince you all, or even me, that maybe it's ok. I am more convinced now of your analysis in the first post, that is was a dip attempt, or at minimum got a bad stain somewhere along its long life. This is just a FYI and if anyone has an idea, fire away. Simple as that. Ignore if tired of this subject. :-) Too bad they did that though, because it really is a nice coin in hand. Tremendous cartwheel luster all around, even through the gnarly stain. Pictures, no matter how I try, do it no justice. Anyway, all comments welcome.

This is a details coin by any definition. Why are we still talking about it?

Calling it a stain glorifies it, IMO. A better way to describe it is DAMAGE caused in part by someone most likely trying to chemically clean it (which also explains the "luster"). Personally I'd pass on it.
And too, I agree with Coinfrog. next?

Gentlemen (and/or ladies)...I was just trying to understand WHAT chemical was used to attempt this failed cleaning. That's all. A knowledge seeking question, apart from the first, now dead issue question. I made it clear I was not looking to beat a dead horse. The coin is a loss. I was simply asking, with better pictures, does anybody know what may have been used to attempt to clean this given the yellowish tone we see (dipping solution)? Note I said I accepted all conclusions of first run.
I also stated if you don't want to comment as it has been addressed....ignore. Plain English. No takers? Not a problem.
And Grant it is there Greasy!! It is now a conversation piece, with history at its core. Very cool. It's name? (as I name my coins). "Mr. Lincoln Grant" Onward to the next subject.
