Hi again all,
Thanks for the opinions, and glad to continue the conversation, especially before we get the results. I have a feeling that anyone who says "this coin is an MS68" is probably wrong most of the time.
I guess where I'm coming from is that the intensity of the luster on this coin is different than other Washingtons I've seen personally. Again, I'm just trying to understand US coin grading at this point.
What I would say is that MS 65, 66, 67 quarters basically look the same but they have less marks, and, importantly, smaller marks as you go up, particularly on the bust itself. So, an MS65 is a basic MS67 coin with more marks. Or, an MS67 is a basic MS65 coin with less marks.
This coin, to me, is another world in terms of the luster intensity. Who knows? Maybe it was cleaned to get this way! Or, the luster does qualify for a higher grade and there are just too many marks. There are a lot of reasons it could not be a 68 or a 67+.
Again, anybody going out on a limb and saying an older coin is a 68 is usually wrong, I'm sure.
I'll find out soon and post the result, no matter how wrong I am!
