I can see MS-66, maybe 67 but not 68.

Hi again all,

Thanks for the opinions, and glad to continue the conversation, especially before we get the results. I have a feeling that anyone who says "this coin is an MS68" is probably wrong most of the time.

I guess where I'm coming from is that the intensity of the luster on this coin is different than other Washingtons I've seen personally. Again, I'm just trying to understand US coin grading at this point.

What I would say is that MS 65, 66, 67 quarters basically look the same but they have less marks, and, importantly, smaller marks as you go up, particularly on the bust itself. So, an MS65 is a basic MS67 coin with more marks. Or, an MS67 is a basic MS65 coin with less marks.

This coin, to me, is another world in terms of the luster intensity. Who knows? Maybe it was cleaned to get this way! Or, the luster does qualify for a higher grade and there are just too many marks. There are a lot of reasons it could not be a 68 or a 67+.

Again, anybody going out on a limb and saying an older coin is a 68 is usually wrong, I'm sure.

I'll find out soon and post the result, no matter how wrong I am!

Many toned coins can get high MS grades, most important is the amount of hits and marks IMO. Frosty mint fresh luster like this one can also be found on lower MS grade coins. It does have nice eye appeal.

I am wondering how the three small marks on the upper neck might affect the grade. Otherwise, it is a very clean coin with great mint luster.

I could see MS-66.

Hi all,

Bah! Got the results back. Disappointed, but it's alright. I didn't pay a ton for it, actually, but I thought I had a big find. Not sure what it means that the nicest quarter I've ever seen is only a 66+.

Not a bad coin a higher number is always nice but sometimes it just isn't ment to be so. Everyone seemed to grade this quarter at pretty much 66 the plus is a perk I am sure you at least broke even. Looks good in an NGC slab tho dont personally see where it lost 4 points myself.

Yes. That's why I thought the luster would carry the day and help it up to a 67 or more. Crazy luster. It's amazing, though, how accurately people on CCF graded it from the photos!

There's less 66+ grades on this date than 67s, so as far as I'm concerned, you did good!
