I'm handing out Ike dollars for Halloween this year. All in MS62 or 63 grade. I only get around 20 to 30 kids...

1) Amazingly enough banks merchants etc are not obliged to accept any legal tender....from the Bank of Canada

Same thing in the US, no one is OBLIGATED to accept legal tender. So says the Treasury Dept.

That's a neat idea. Unless the kids think it's a foil covered chocolate coin.

@Conder101

It's a bit different here in Massachusetts. We have an old anti-discrimination law that requires merchants accept legal tender!

Quote:
Section 10A. No retail establishment offering goods and services for sale shall discriminate against a cash buyer by requiring the use of credit by a buyer in order to purchase such goods and services. All such retail establishments must accept legal tender when offered as payment by the buyer.

I used to get my kids to do jobs around the house for two dollar bills and Presidential dollars. Since they never saw any of them anywhere else they thought they were getting something special.

Well, I learn things here all the time, and just did again. I thought the definition of "legal tender" was that you had to take it. Now I know different. I think that's a little weird.

Biggest and only issue I've had over the years is a clerk whining that "halves don't fit in the till tray."
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

I lose 5-10 minutes of my life, that I will never get back, teaching the recipient basic decimal math.

AND... I am not very smart.

I've spent halves, Ikes, golden dollars, and SBAs all at various times. I've had to educate cashiers several times that a Half Dollar is worth 50 cents, and also is not a Silver Dollar. I used to train new cashiers at a regional grocery store and again at a national retailer, and I would encourage them to make their customers change with these coins if they were in their drawer. The way our cash drawers were arranged, the dollar and Half coins would need to go into the bay with the extra rolls. That way at the end of the night, we didn't have oddball coins to put in the safe.

I've been tossing halves to the street musicians I pass by downtown for a while. (Most of them are entertaining. If they're any good, I have some Sac's too.) This evening, the guy thanked me, and said they were cool. I can't speak to his experience spending them, but it made me smile.

Well done.
