They are just as ugly in this thread as they are in the other.
I copied the HIGH RES Mint pictures, pasted them to PAINT and then reduced them to the size of a real penny. None of the fine details are evident when reduced. Another case of fine in theory but a failure in execution. Let 2009 be the last year for the Cent.

Hmm...I saw those renderings. What's up with Lincoln and his log? The perspective given on Lincoln makes him look massive, as if he's sat on a downed Sequoia tree. The overall effect is cartoonish...I don't understand what they're doing with recent US coins. Nor do I get the half-built Capitol building...why not a more historic moment pertaining to Lincoln, such as his Gettysburg Address?  Edited by KurtS

It is a great piece of history, which is why I like that design.
For me, it also has a meaning that our nation is always "under construction" and that is our duty as citizens to ensure that this construction is never halted or abandoned.

I can get behind this viewpoint--and it was certainly an era which warranted reconstruction. In regards to US coins, I'm getting pretty darn bored with these good men depicted in such a lackluster fashion (pres dollars in particular). It really is heinous--and I'm disinclined further from collecting modern US coins. Does every coin have to be a history lesson, even if it's unattractive?  Gasparro's work on the current Memorial reverse is leagues ahead of these ideas. Edited by KurtS

I would think the big thing will be just how many different ones there will end up being. The P Mint naturally will make their 4, The D Mint will make their 4 and I suppose the S Mint will make their Proof coins. Now if there is a large and small date, A solid Copper and a Copper plated Zinc of all those, Possibly a Gold and Platinum and Silver plated ones and maybe to top it all off a three sided one. Then of course the Franklin Mint will make painted ones showing Lincoln with a hat.
OK so what is next for our cent? Anyone know if there was a president with a birthday in the 10's. Such as 1710, 1810?
Maybe a Gingis Khan cent? Elvis Presly cent? One cent for each State or has that been tried with other coins?

Our Nations Capitol is in worse shape than that today!
I did find it amusing to learn that Lincoln wore that stovepipe hat to tuck important papers inside when he was a lawyer and found it a handy place.
