So what is a MHD? As to prices of almost any Mercury dime, it is really a lot of just popularity. There are so many high grade Mercury dimes available, the prices of those just don't jump way up there. A coin magazine called the Coin & Currency Market Review has listed a separate section of Mercury dimes with FSB. Those values are way more excessive than for a coin in just a high graded MS. And then too there are those like the 1945 with FSB that are just not available.

I understand that there are multi millions of the Mercs that I am talking about ( Later date MS FSB ) ,but because of this they are very inexpensive . I'm thinking a perfect hand me down for the Grandkids especially if they take to the hobby . As some of us old timers used to say: Salt them away for future generations .

I would agree somewhat. At the least they've leveled off and have been holding steady for some time. What I had noticed, at least in the Pittsburgh area, is an increased awareness from some younger collectors I recently saw flipping through folders of them at a coin show last month. So perhaps they are about to awake from a slumber.

1940 - 44 FSB high mint state are definitely not cheap compare to grades MS-66 and below.
This depends on what the collector preferred.

Good luck on finding fair price with 1945-P FSB.

It's affordable in MS-67 non-FSB from those years for non die-hard Mercury dimes collectors.

Even though millions and millions were produced, you gotta wonder how many would grade MS-FSB and are still available today? They are, in my opinion, the most beautiful coin ever made!

Not a lot that's for sure. I'm now working on set #2 of those FSB Dimes. Set #1 is now complete with all FSB coins. Some are a bit on the not best side but as close as possible.

So do you agree a common Merc in the 40's in MS-64 FSB is a virtual $25 coin or less is a sleeper for the long term ?

True fully split bands are sleepers now AND sleepers for the future. Not surprisingly, most of the sellers on ebay haven't a clue what a FSB looks like.

With the exception of the 45=P, 42/1 P and D there is nothing remotely rare or even difficult about the late date FB. The 39-S is one of the hardest of them and there's still already several hundred graded and that's really with it not even being worth it below a 66. There's tons of FB late date Mercs out there with a couple exceptions, most just aren't worth grading or selling online so you only see what happens to be local in lower grades.

I'm not sure how we are defining sleeper here, but a sleep should be something whose price is to low for the effort and rarity. There are plenty of examples of this in Seated and Barber coins.

There's nothing sleeperish about common mercs where you have to bank on either silver spiking or 100s of thousands of new collectors wanting to do a set. Common coins will basically always be common. The other fatal flaw is that if the price every does start to climb than the countless FBs that aren't worth grading right now start getting sent in. By all means enjoy the series and collect them if someone wants, but when things are 20-30 bucks for a US classic coin almost a 100 years old it isn't a sleeper.

Ultimately, the prices are based on supply and demand. Demand is not what it used to be. I have gotten several FSB for the years I have, which thus far is only 1942-1945, for inclusion in my mint state sets for those years. The prices did not seem out of line, and in each of those cases, I looked at the coins myself before buying. In the end, I enjoy the coins and don't even think about if they are sleepers or not.

Not really or necessarily, but the supply line is many multiples of what it used to be
