This coin should be in a details holder - cleaned.

The dark splotchy flat surfaces, dark areas by the various devices, and polished. This is a "conserved" coin that made it's way to a straight grade holder.

Run from this coin.

For the right price, I'd have no problem buying that coin. If you would let us know what the price is, that would make all the difference on buy/pass for me. NGC is a good technical grader. So, really hard to give a good opinion, if I don't know what it costs.

certification number is good coin books at 625 I'm with edweather tho if the price is right and you are happy with it is what matters a nice coin that would fit in well with the rest of your Mercury dime collection I think.
Rest in Peace

I have to agree with Acloco , A conserved coin that's made it's way into a straight holder .

The price I was offered is $500 cash. I think the price is good but it doesn't have good eye appeal. I can get an unslabbed one from a dealer I trust for $425 but that one is vf not XF. I may pass and get something else, still on the fence. The slabbing doesn't sway me either way, but eye appeal is important to me.

I agree with what's been already noted above - the coin looks like it's been cleaned/dipped out and since retoning. Hard to tell by the images if hairlined, but looks too "shiny" in the profile/right obverse fields & devices to not cause some hesitation.

You have come a long way from not being interested in error coins to considering this one. There is just something that grabs you with this variety, does it not? I don't have a 42/1, but for the right price I would love to have one in my collection. But I agree with others, $500 doesn't feel right on this particular coin. Be careful as lots of counterfeits exist. If you have a dealer you can trust 100%, then don't bother with a slabbed one (I'm not big on stabs in general). When the right coin comes along for the right price, you'll know it. Best of luck to you in your search!

Merclover, I blame you :) I actually don't have any error coins, but there are 2 I would get, the 1942/1 (not the D) and the 1955 LWC.

I would get this one but at $500, I can get a few more things I want. If I can find one for around $300 I'll get it. $500 puts it into the price that I would rather get it slabbed.

Poindexter here. Technically both the 1942/1 Merc and 1955 DDO and both varieties and doubled dies. Class 3 and 1 respectively.

I'm happy to accept the blame for turning you on to the 42/1 :) I too would like the 55 double date as well. I am fairly active looking through rolls of cents searching for errors. I realise the odds of a 55 double date turning up in the wild are close to nil, but I keep searching and hoping. The second one I find will be coming your way!

Hey there fellow Mercury dime collectors!

Yep, pretty much what I thought when I looked at it. The broken and faded spots of toning and polished look definitely suggests it has been cleaned. Too bad.
