It does look like a regular 1968-S cent in the scan (scans don't show luster), and it has without a doubt seen a bit of circulation. It looks much better in person, and it sure doesn't look like any of the business-strike late 60's "S" cents that I've found (and a couple of those even have some mint red!). It looks almost exactly like my Special Mint Set 1965-67 cents, but with a bit of wear.

I almost suspected something was amiss since he had "AWESOME" in all-caps, but he still got me!

I have read that the strike of a proof coin is still distinguishable even if the luster is worn away. A bigger picture (or good closeup) might help someone (that knows this better than myself) to make that determination.

I put my 1968-S cent next to a typical circulated 1969-S cent. With the camera flash off, you can see some of the difference (but not as clearly as in person).
