Eleven months in...

Quote:
3) Get to 400 issuers on Numista (currently 348)... if that's still a thing by the time I get there
375. Long way to go.
Quote:
3a) If possible, also get to 250 countries (currently 234)
239. Even longer way to go.

Everything else is unchanged from the September report (some specifics changed a little, but the wording applied just as well to the new versions).

I'd probably do a final report in another three weeks or so, but unless something changes significantly in my plans (...which is admittedly very possible), it will still mostly just be a copy of the September one.

Nice updates everyone! Since we still have three weeks left in 2020, I'll wait to post by final report until then. There's a good chance I'll be able to complete one more goal in that time.

I've actually had some minor updates to my own goal progress as well (compared to my last two reports). Don't intend to post any specific details before the final report in three weeks, though.
That said, I don't think I'd actually fill any goals (that I hadn't filled already) by December 31st. But there still would probably be far more progress than I expected when I wrote Wednesday's mini-report.

(It helps that, just as in so many previous years, I will probably end up receiving a relative lot of money in December.
Though now I really want some year where this happens in, say, April or May and I could actually go coin shopping outdoors without having to dress for the winter and hope that the sellers actually bother to show up.)

[EDIT: added some missing sentences]

My first set of 2020 goals (on Jan 3):

Quote:

My 2020 goals are similar to those of j1m:

0) Receive and photograph a 2020 coin, for the HFBCWG6 thread (coins have been ordered).

1) Add some more dates for the OFEY subcollection -- these will be in the 1400s.

2) Some of these dates (like 1486 and 1464) for the OFEY subcollection will have to be Islamic.

3) Add some more Numista issuers/contries for my OFEI/OFEC subcollection (see #6 below)

4) Replace some of the unslabbed coins in my virtual 7070 subcollection with slabbed ones -- this will mostly be quarters and half dollars.

5) (I don't plan to add any Romanian or Mongolian coins.)

6) Add something from the Rus Principalities (probably Moscow). Unfortunately, it's hard to find one on ebay that's also already in the Numista catalog.

The amended goals of Mar 26

Quote:

All coin collecting activities are on hold, until I see how bad the health and economic situation will get.

I haven't added much since then -- only a couple of early pre-decimal Australian silver coins.

My year end progress report (items in red are new since Sept update):

Quote:
1. Spend far less on coins than I did in 2019. That should be easy since I filled in a lot of gaps in 2019 ... but the remaining gaps are more expensive to fill. Epic fail! Am in the process of analyzing my spending pattern. But as a result, I met some goals I must have forgot to mention back in January

2. Acquire more early dated coins (1474-1506) that fit within my existing themes (i.e. avoid "scope creep" into new areas in order to get dates I am missing). I have gotten 1474, 1476, 1478, 1481 (all Burgundian Netherlands), 1482 & 1484 (both undated but attributed), 1490, 1494, 1495, 1499, 1501, 1503, 1505. Good year on this goal, though it cost me a bit. .

3. Acquire the few missing 16th century dates in my Kingdom of Poland OFEY: 1516, 1553, 1590. Done! The 1516 came from a CCF member, thanks, @giedrius. In addition, I've acquired over half my missing Poland dates in the next century: 1602, 1610, 1617, 1625, 1628, 1631, 1633, 1672, 1680, 1682, 1684, 1699, 1655, 1664, 1685. And have gotten these dates in which Poland did not issue coins (at lest not ones I can afford), but nearby places like Courland, Livonia or Silesia did: 1638, 1642, 1643, 1648, 1669, 1674, 1675, 1693, 1694, 1697.

4. Continue to learn. In order to fill in the gaps in my 15th-18th century OFEY mostly dominated by Poland, I have been learning about (and, of course, buying):
15th century Florence (with an assist from @spence)
16th and 17th century Silesian coinage
17th and 18th century Brabant

i did fairly well with my goals for 2020, despite the covid garbage. I didn't want much, so I already had an easy path.

i nabbed 9 of the 12 remaining Lincoln wheat cents that I needed; I let the streets of key west nab 5 silver dollars for me; I acquired no gold this year, which is a bummer, but there's just not been the money for it. 1/10th oz gold eagles have doubled in price (but not value) since my last purchase. so when income goes down & costs (of everything) goes up, it's a little difficult to buy coins.

it is for that reason I am not setting any goals for 2021.

Post from April 30th - progress report June 15th
further progress Report Dec 13th - updates in red

"My goals were to expand my halfcrown collection to have one coin from every reign back to Henry VIII eventually and knew it would be hard before Charles II. - Got James II and 2 coins before Charles II but anything earlier eludes me.

Also to complete the Halfcrowns from 1887 onwards and buy several rare dates. - I now have most dates from 1887 onwards and have just added 1903 and 1904 - only 1905 and 1965! eludes me between 1899 and 1970. Now have 1905 and greater examples of 1820, 26, 91, 96, 97 and 18 (Complete 1899 - 1964, also added 1817, better 1834, 1849 and some more 1870s and 1880s dates - AU range 1938 - 1942 and 1945/46.

There was also the ongoing upgrades of NZ Florins and Halfcrowns to at least VF for silver (1933 - 1946) and EF for Cupronickel (1947 - 1965).The silver halfcrowns are all VF at least now, but the Florin plan is on ice for a bit. I finished off the Kiwi Florins in September and have every date in at least VF condition including 1936 and 1946 Flatback, many coins are AU and UNC, along with a NZ Cupronickel Halfcrown upgrade in which all but 1947 are EF or better.

Also to buy silver coins of Ireland from 1928 to 1945.Good progress - added silver halfcrowns from 1928, 33, 39 and 40
No more here sorry, very few Irish coins on offer

So far the Half crowns are doing better than expected. I have all but 2 dates of the 1908 - 1951 period and now have all the rulers from George II forwards. I have also added Anne, Charles II and even Charles I and today the Commonwealth (Incredibly hard). James II, William III and him with Mary II along with George I elude me. A big thrust to get modern dates has meant I have only removed William III to this list- but its still only June

I won't even bother with Henry VIII (Gold one type only), Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth and James I until I win Lotto, all 3 of my 17th century coins have cost an arm and a leg. James II cost me $270 but its a big box to check and makes me happy.

NZ goes well, with all but 2 dates of the silver halfcrowns upgraded and now 3 early Cupronickel ones replaced with AU coins. The Florins have started well with 4 silver dates now with VF - EF lustre pieces.Bought 2 errors, a one diamond 3d of 1942 and a strapless bust 1957 6d.
Added to this strapless 3d and many upgrades of coins to VF/EF 3d's are mostly complete upgrades and a few 6ds and 1/-. Good buy in of EF/AU 1950s shillings and AU Halfpennies 1951 to 1965 except 54/55.

Ireland I have added a EF 1928 Florin and just bought 4 early halfcrowns in the same condition along with a stunning Choice UNC 1966 10 shilling piece.

Fiji goes well with 8 silver coins and the rare 1940 Halfpenny - for a Pandemic year I need to be thankful and congratulatory and also blessed."Pretty much left it for time being

Another big achievement was adding two very nice Southern Rhodesian Halfcrowns, a gorgeous 1927 South African one and a decent second Boer one

Also started collecting Egyptian and Turkish silver coins of the Ottoman Empire

My global change collection has also improved.

Also got back into Australia big time, with 27 High grade silver florins, a big $2 coin collection with many coloured $2 coins, mint sets and most dates of 1c to 20c of Australia, several dollars etc.

Overall 2020 has been an annus mirabulus with over $7,000 poured into my coin collection.

The other side effect of the Halfcrown collecting was branching into English Florins in August and with the help of another instant collection of mostly average material and several skilled buy ins, this has also taken off and grown well and I now have about 60 different florins going back to 1849.

2021 is consolidation, but perhaps with some spending reductions.

In 2020 dollar terms, my spending average on my current collection has worked out to be about $2,000 per year, over a period of over 40 years.
Haven't sold any coins, just building the collection, with the same single minded collecting goal.

2020 has been an interesting year to say the least, but numismatically it was a pretty good year, if for no other reason than I was very blessed to continue collecting. Here's my final report:

Quote:
1. Finish inventorying and photographing collection

I'd say I completed 75% of this goal. I finished an audit of my collection and have everything photographed, but there are many smaller organizational tasks to be completed, alongside the need for better photos, all of which I mentally included in this goal. That being said, I accomplished much of the spirit of this goal, and I'm content with that.

Quote:
2. Avoid impulse buys, i.e. anything that is not on my set lists

I did so well keeping this goal for 356 days, but then I splurged and bought an individual Mayflower medal as a Christmas gift for myself.

Quote:
3. Buy one Barber dime and one Washington quarter for my sets

I picked up one of each. I was pleasantly surprised because it's hard to find the PQ coins I'm looking for online.

Quote:
4. Buy one ATB mint or proof set to fill the holes in my albums

I ended up purchasing 5 ATB proof sets this year, alongside 2 full mint sets (not counting 2020 releases).

Quote:
5. Add one book to my small numismatic library

I did not purchase any numismatic books this year. I was holding out hope to receive one for Christmas by the end of 2020, but with three days to go I don't expect that to happen.

Quote:
6. Get another person interested in numismatics

COVID-19 threw a wrench in my plans for this goal. Hard to get another person interested in numismatics when it's not safe to interact with another person.

In conclusion, I'm happy with the numismatic progress I made in 2020. When I wrote my goals a year ago, I couldn't have imagined how the year turned out, so completing any pre-pandemic goals is a success. Here's to a better 2021!

Final update...

(Red parts have changed from the September report.)

Quote:
Immediate goal: get a 2020-dated coin for the upcoming HFBCWG-6. This is really a 2019 goal that spilled over into 2020; the deadline is roughly January 7th.
That did indeed happen. OTOH, I'm missing 2021 now.

Quote:
1) Get some more missing dates for my OFEY
Yay!
...Though less than I expected. CoViD-19 seriously cut into my coin shopping, and when I went back I got distracted by banknotes and ancients.
Quote:
1a) In particular, fill in the remaining post-1800 holes (1850, 1847, 1845, 1844, 1839, 1829, 1827, 1823, 1821, 1817, 1811)
1850, 1847, 1845, 1839, 1829, 1811. The other five (1844, 1827, 1823, 1821, 1817) are still missing. (And I suspect I probably would've had most of them by now if I didn't fall sick for the last two weeks of December.)
Quote:
1b) If possible, get an unbroken line even further back
Haha nope. Though I did fill up a bunch of 18th and 17th century gaps as well.
Quote:
1c) Regardless of any actual progress, take photos of all of those coins for posting on CCF (this is harder than it sounds, because the smartphone serving as my camera has horrible battery problems)
Haha nope. Though it would be an interesting project now that I figured out that my new smartphone isn't actually too bad at taking coin pics.

Quote:
2) Related to the above: get some dated Islamic coins from the 15th century AD
Found one that might qualify; if/when I get the courage to remove it from its 2x2 I would post it for attribution confirmation.
Quote:
2a) Non-Islamic dated (and/or single-year-type) coins from the 15th century AD would be welcome, but unlikely to fit within my budget
This was never expected to happen in the first place.
Quote:
2b) Dated coins from before the 15th century are useful as well, though I already have a bunch of those
One or two 14th century dates, IIRC. Don't recall offhand.

Quote:
3) Get to 400 issuers on Numista (currently 348)... if that's still a thing by the time I get there
377. Long way to go.
Quote:
3a) If possible, also get to 250 countries (currently 234)
239. Even longer way to go.

Quote:
4) Fill some of the remaining holes in my Dansco 7070 album
Got a Draped Bust cent, though it's not in the album yet (pending confirmation of variety ID).
Quote:
4a) In particular, get at least one classic commemorative, and at least one Seated Liberty silver
Haha no.

Quote:
5) Get at least one more coin for my Romanian type set attempt
Not that I could recall.
Quote:
5a) If I can find some Mongolian coins I didn't have yet, that would be cool as well
Ditto, though I did add some Icelandic types.

Quote:
6) Formalize my USSR non-commemorative type set progress, figure out what (if anything) I'm still missing, and get it (...discounting the 1921 ruble and the gold, which are out of my budget)
Never got around to it, though by sheer luck I did get the 1921 ruble (actually 1922).

Quote:
7) Formalize my Russian Empire AE type set, and fill at least some of the holes
Yes to the latter, no to the former (I did find an old list, but I don't have access to it at the moment).
It looks like most of what I'm still missing is rare, though.
