It seems that there is a bit of confusion in this thread leading to the discussion of two separate things. Personal Property Tax- a tax paid on personal items- usually automobiles, boats, RVs, motorcycles, etc This is an annual tax in addition to the sales tax paid when an item is purchased. Not all states have this tax so some may not know that this is completely separate from property taxes. The taxing entity is usually at the state level. PP taxes are relatively small and they decrease based on the depreciation of a vehicle. I owe $90 this year on a 2000 model car but my wife bought a new vehicle last year(about $20,000) and her tax is $400 Property Tax- an annual tax paid on real estate(land or building). I believe that every state in the US has a property tax and it is generally assessed by a local municipality or county. This tax tends to increase over time as the value of real estate increases. Property taxes usually fund a local government or a school district and property taxes tend to be measured in thousands of dollars, not hundreds.

My county added a 1% "local option" to the sales tax a couple of years ago and now my property tax measures in hundreds of dollars... just barely.

Thanks biokemist6. That was more what I was getting at. We have property tax here, called rates, but there is no personal property tax.

The solution to getting dollar coins to circulate isas simpleas when I presented it in a letter to the idiot in Coin World in 1971: Quit printing ones. If they stopped printing tens, everyone would use two fives. Ditto if you had to ask for tens and wait while they got them from the vault. Another way to get dollar coins is find the bank that supplies the post orifice for their cvending machines.

Quote: Quit printing ones. We have a winner! Why spend millions on marketing dollar coins, plus all the hand-wringing over making the coin "appealing" if people have no real reason to switch? If the $1 note were discontinued, and if the Mint issued slugs stamped "$1", everyone would use them without blinking.

Quote: ..a letter to Obama perhaps. Dear Mr. President, please tell our Congressmen to stop taking bribes "incentives" from <insert beneficiaries of any selfish "cause" here>. But seriously, maybe we can start a petition? Or maybe we should send a letter to each of the three representatives we all have in Washington? Unless of course you are not a citizen of a US State, since I just noticed this is in the Main forum and not a US forum!

We should actually go ask Congress to print $200, $500 and $1000! The Swiss are doing it, and surely can't be outdone by them and the Singaporeans too! (Singapore has $10000, $1000 and $100 notes, which convert out to US$6700, US$670 and US$67, respectively)

When the Sacagawea dollar was getting ready to be minted for the first time, the mint contracted Double Eagle Market Development Co. (a PENgroup affiliated consulting firm) to promote the Dollar coin. That appeared to be a failure as I am thinking the current promotion will be. That was 10 years ago, maybe history does repeat itself.
