For years I thought a Type Set was out of the question and out of reach for me. This guy (whom ever it is) motivated me to start, stay focused and complete it. To my surprise, I actually had many of the coins. I pulled the best from other sets and albums.
@Oriole, I'm not sure, but riddle me this. A MS64 1877-S Seated Half is 3125 pnts, and costs ~$1200-$1400. But a 1976 PF69DCAM Washington quarter which costs $10 is 3345 pnts. How does that make sense? Not to mention Proofs are heavily weighted, even moderns.
A MS67RD LWC, if you just want a generic example, costs around $80, and a PF67RD about half that. The MS67 is 774 points, and the PF67 the same amount. But what about a grade up? A 1958 Wheat cent in MS68 is worth over 3k and is worth only 849 points, while the PF68 from the same year costs $30 and is worth 3.8k points. It doesn't make sense. At all. Not one bit. People around my point total fall into 1 of 2 categories. Either people like myself who spend time and $ accumulating a high quality collection, or people who spend a fraction of the $ and score higher due to crazy scoring rules. Seeing how high ranks on the registry board have cash incentives, it makes my life harder to deal with those kinds of people.
Well technically yes. Let me rephrase. I don't like collecting by date or mint at all. I don't get any enjoyment from a dansco of Lincolns or Morgans or whatever, it just doesn't interest me to have 50 or 100 of the same design. I'd much rather have a few interesting and special examples of each design so that every coin feels more "unique" in a sense. I dunno if that makes sense.

Haven't been active on the NGC registry since they decided no more PGGS coins, I do remember enjoying the process when I started. While this type registry is broader than my collection (I prefer the 7070) it appears I did start one once, and even after all these years it is still have number 70 on that type set registry:
Sad to think my kids and I probably would have finished our Type Set had NGC NOT made the corporate decision to ban non-NGC graded coins. It's their business, but the way they went about it was a huge turn off to many involved. NGC lost a lot of good will with their short sighted decision. I understand they realized it was a bad decision years' later, but those intervening years put the fire out.
Congrats on your set! I went in and updated my Seated half dollar sets and then I noticed something. I am ranked 5th for a couple of different sets but the #1 and #2 were so far out of reach I started to wonder how they got that high. I realized the 1st and 2nd place were actually dealers/business owners and they have sold many of their coins from those sets (I know because I have bought some and have seen many on ebay). How can NGC give awards to people who don't even have the coins they say they have? I decided to just give up on even trying to get any higher, it wasn't worth it when you are going against dealers/businesses. If NGC would require an annual confirmation of the coins in a set and they separate dealers from individuals then I would probable keep working on my sets.
