No, they have been known to dip submitted coins, though usually they ask first. And they deny they they do it.

Holy ... Man, that's just not right! Unbelievable!

I guess it's dip it and get slabbed or not get dipped and get BB. It kind of ruined my experience with submitting if they aren't going to be the way I want to have it preserved.

How can that be when they are supposed to body bag a dipped coin?

They slab dipped coins all the time, so does NGC. Why do you think that there are so many 100+ year old white coins residing in slabs? The difference is whether someone does a good job of dipping with no leftover evidence other than lustrous untoned surfaces(slabbed) or someone does a bad job, leaving dip residue on the coin and stripping off the luster(bodybag). The problem is too few people have actually mastered the skills necessary to properly dip a coin without being detrimental, most just wind up ruining the coins they attempt I cannot really comment on why a grader would dip or how often they do it to submissions(I have no clue) but it is a dirty little "secret" that they do it.

BTW Nelrak, I prefer the original look of your coin

What a travesty, it looked better originally. I'd post this thread on the PCGS and NGC boards. Yes, PCGS does dip coins, but I thought they would ask first.

Just because it is more attractive!
(well, to some of us anyway. Many others prefer white.
I love that color.)

I must be a very naive person, I never thought for a second graders dip coins. I also am a fan of the toned look on a coin, the more the better. LIKE FROM THE 60'S FOR ME " THE COLORS MAN"I am sorry for you that it seems you did enjoy the look also. BE WELL...

Dont wanna rain on the parade but isn't toning easily faked and a bit dubious when buying ?I seen some toned coins go for huge prices on ebay then read about how easy it is to fake.

Undetectable fake toning is not easy. Much more difficult than dipping properly. I think everyone should try faking toning using the various techniques to have the experience to detect them. I didn't see much reason why the TPG would have dipped, the toning didn't seem to obscure any surface feature.

And I still feel that I see the original toning beneath the plastic. Being held in the plastic collar at a depth beneath the surface strongly limits the diffraction layers of the toning.

I don't mind colouful toning but personally I think this coin looked better for the dipping. But that is only my opinion. There seems to be a fine line between what some call toning and what I call tarnish.

Having said that this isn't my coin, and it isn't the PCGS's coin, therefore they had no right to dip it without authority from the owner.

You should get to keep your own coins the way you like them. I would have to complain to the TPG about what they have done to this coin. You have good, plentiful, photographic evidence, so why not complain. You should be compensated, unless it specifically says in their information that they may do this without your consent.

Ive a large surplus of Mercury dimes , ill photograph some prior and after to see , ill also mix in one genuine toned dime and see if it can be picked out.
Lets say we choose 3 methods to fake toning , if your up for it give me the methods and ill stick to them.
A least one method I know of takes a lot of time , quick and easy cheat toning is the ticket here and see what evolves?

I actually had something like this happen to my 1914 quarter eagle I sent in for grading. It came back a whole more lustrous then it went it. I do not know if it was just me looking at it through the flip for the short time I had it or what..lol

I think it might be the slab knocking down the toning. Its so nice looking outside the slab. It makes you want to crack it out and see it

I have heard that PCGS dips certain UNC coins. BUT everything I've ever heard about it was in relationship to proofs that have that milky toning on it caused by the plastic in proof sets. Thinking about it though if they're doing it to proofs then I don't see why they wouldn't be doing it to MS coins also.

I am appalled to think that anyone would mess with a coin I paid them good money to have them alter it.
Unless it was a restoration service and I knew it in the first place that I was asking for an improvement of a problem coin.... No way!

The original images of your nice toned dime show quite a change down there at the rim by the motto.
Especially there below the E in "we" and T in "trust". It almost looks to me like something was built up there on the rim and now when it is the slab it looks as if that situation there has changed and disappeared.

I have never sent a coin to be graded, I will buy a slabbed coin, but both my brother and father have, and they both claim they got back a lesser switched coin. Of those involved were one of the 1932 mintmarked quarters and either the 1885 or 1886 V nickels. That was enough for me to stay away from sending coins out.

I might take a chance and stand in line at a large coin show sometime and get one slabbed on the spot if the chance comes up. I do have a good number I'd love to have slabbed.

That's unbelievable! I never would have thought that PCGS or NGC would do something like that. Even though I'm not a big fan of PCGS it still just blows my mind. How do you guys know this? Has a former employee came out and talked about it or is it from personal experiences with them? I'm just curious because I'm just blown away by this.
