Very nice coin. A couple spots of verdigris and early corrosion, but I don't see any obvious cleaning or anything that should detail the coin.

I'm with Ty2020b

VF30 range. I dont see any signs of cleaning and if so it was a long time ago and retoned to be acceptable. its a good candidate for verdicare as you do have some verdigris that can cause long term issues. as for the grade of XF, I cant see it that high, however, I think I would accept the XF grade with details as most collectors would grade the coin and not the holder. its probably a wash, VF30 straight or XF40 details.

Go to this link - it helps educate on a lot of coin grading conundrums:

Interesting, I don't see the cleaning, appears to be honest wear. The corrosion is minor. The crud on the coin shows its originality. I would crack it and try NCG or ANACS.

Thanks for the replies. The pictures are not the best (from a phone camera), but to me the coin does appear to be quite good quality but also slightly "off", due to the dull purplish tone. In that sense I don't dispute the XF/cleaned grade, was just trying to understand it. As others noted, regardless of the grade I think it's a decent looking coin, whether or not it was actually cleaned.

I have removed all of the coins from that book and put them in 2x2s. I don't have any verdi-care but did a quick rinse in acetone first (although not this one). Surprisingly most of them are in good condition and don't have verdigris but perhaps I'll need to go through again to see if there are some that need better preservation.
Rest in Peace

That's great , I'm sorry I have a habit of not reading the title of a thread all the way through . I should have caught that you had already sent it in for grading .My bad :(

This was the other one I had graded:

1914-D-LWC-With-PCGS-Details-Grade

As you can see there is a fair amount of verdigris, but based on advice I got at the time I took it straight out of the book, put it in a flip, and submitted it (well, and took a picture with my phone first). I was never clear on what steps PCGS would take before putting it in the holder but it does look cleaner than in the original photos.

interesting to think that your grandfather quite possibly pulled these from circulation!

He most likely got them from circulation. He started collecting after working at a bank for while in the late 40's. Along with the complete book of LWCs up to 1947 were a lot of shoeboxes filled with envelopes of sorted cents up to the late 50's. Unfortunately many of them were damaged over time due to poor storage (can see examples in my other posts). I've been working through it for the past year trying to see what's left.
