The following is the Bar Code read out for the 89CC above:0028266316359049. The barcode does not match the grade and serial number. The holder and coin are both a counterfeit.
Here is the Bar Code read out for the heritage coin: 0071905013386675

Slider...what coin does that barcode go to? I was unable to get the link to work. I'm going back hat in hand and going to not be accusatory...

Sorry the slab is a fake. This one has the wrong font used, you can easily match up the third thick line in the barcode and compare it to the one from Heritage that's where it starts to break down. Other markings on the coin don't match Heritage's photos either.
Really hope the dealer takes it back no questions asked. If they don't let us know there are recourses to take and we can help somewhat with the direction to go. Any good dealer would never let this one slip through, I can see missing a more common dollar but any coin over a couple thousand dollar level should be worthy of a really thorough examination.
Good Luck cboyera! Keep us updated to what happens. I agree going in with facts to the dealer and not being accusatory to begin the return of course. We all make mistakes, just some like should never happen. Really sorry and it stinks you have to go through this. Hope you come to a good resolution, the coin is off the market for good and that you find your 1889-CC you want!

When I ran the photo of this coin through the Slab Reader app on my iPhone it comes back to: PCGS #16091191 an 1905 China-Klagnan Y-145a with a hole drilled through the label? It graded MS62 That cert # no longer comes up in PGCS Verify website. I'm guessing that was also a bogus coin (hence the drill marks through the slab label). Here are the photos copyright Heritage Auctions:

I saw the flames on this topic and when I clicked in this is not the result I expected. Some serious sleuthing went down here, good luck on a full refund OP!

Finally an update...with a happy (for me) ending. After much going back and forth, I have received a full refund. Did elemental analysis of the coin in the slab and it is definitely a fake coin in a fake (broken out and re-sealed with a fake paper grade part) slab. Dealer is turning it in to PCGS to see what they say but it is at least out of my hands now! Could have been a very expensive lesson but thanks to you all, it ended up just being a lesson!
Thank you a bunch!

Glad it worked out well for you. Hard enough watching out for counterfeit coins, much less having to deal with counterfeit slabs.

Most excellent news on a tough hit to the wallet I'm sure cboyera. Glad you were dealing with an honest dealer on this one, it could have been so much worse. So glad it all worked out for you.

Yep,fake. Also got burned on a .... 1889-CC PCGS AU50... One helpful indicator when checking is seeing if the plastic case matches some other PCGS Slabs. The one I bought before checking has a definite yellowish tint to the plastic that none of my other slabs had.

Moral of the Story: always check the image, cert number, AND barcode to make sure you have a genuine coin.

Good to her you are being made whole - there are lessons in this story about how knowledge always supersedes any supposed TPG slab opinion.
