What do you think of this 1814 Classic Head Large Cent? The seller wants about $600 for it.   |

Looks low VF with a decent planchet, but possibly details from an old cleaning. Price seems a bit high for a raw coin that might not straight grade.

@NumisEd - are these the only pics you have? They don't seem to show a natural color.

I am actually reconsidering spending $600 on a Classic Head Large Cent. Perhaps I should look at F to low VF slabbed pieces only and not spend more than $400 per coin unless there is no other way.

You have to take into consideration the low mintage of the 1814 - I think it is a bit more than 357,000 This is what makes the coin so pricey...........

Paying $600 for an 1814 Large Cent in in a VF holder without any problems would be a good buy. In this series it is extremely difficult to find one in VF with original skin without corrosion, scratches, pits, excessive wear or contaminates.

the planchet exhibits light to moderate porosity. it looks pretty much original. the gouge in the nose is the most prominent as its in a key area. the 8 in the date is a little mangled. the rims look good and these classic heads are tough to find decent planchets and strikes. the strike looks pretty even except the top of the reverse which is missing some denticles. something may be going on under the ribbon on field. not sure if was a repair as it looks like some additional metal there. there is also verdigris hiding in some of the denticles on the obverse. if I had some verdicare I would be tempted to remove that. I think its pretty much a poster child for VF20. retail the coin would be valued at between $700 and $800 however I'm not 100% certain the coin would grade straight. personally I would like to get it less than $600 due to that. i'd be much happier at $500

I've seen worse in straight grades holders, but I'd still have to say VF-Details. Nonetheless, decent eye appeal
