This is the D/S variety. Not a tiny s as it looks. The top serif has damage and just a coincidence that it looks like that. The part of the actual S is sticking out the vertical bar. It also has the V shaped die crack going up to the VDB
With cleaning, if its done right, you wont harm the coin. Pure acetone, Verdi-Care. BUT, if you haven't done it before, I wouldn't start with this coin. There is plenty of threads all over the internet on this.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of your help with this coin. In 35 years of collecting merchant trade tokens I never cleaned a single one, so I am thinking I am not going to start now with coins. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have a thousand more questions to come!  |

So I'm new to this level of collecting and I see the reference to Verdi-Care and I wonder are all acetone's the same? I see one reference on the web that Verdi-Care is hard to come by but ample on Amazon? And in case I forget to mention it, I love this site and the expertise you all bring to this great hobby (sickness!!). Thanks |

 to CCF. Verdi is not acetone. You need to use 100% pure acetone and not standard nail polish remover. Verdi is/was made by a member here on CCF. John1  |

Thanks John for that clarification. The topic has so many nuances and opinions so little clarifications are helpful. So If not acetone then what is it?

Thats def a nice find. If I found it I'd take the risk of soaking it in some warm water and a little dawn for a little bit. Some of that gunk will prob come off in the water. Since it's so beat up already I'd even dip a q-tip in the soapy water and very gently see if there is any loose crud that would wipe away easy. As long as your gentle you do t really have to worry about scratching it cause its already so worn and dinged up. Also Use distilled water not just out of the tap. If it was in better shape then I wouldnt take the chance but in my opinion I don't think it would hurt it at all. I do it all the time if I have a coin like that and I've never had any issues. Just my opinion.

That's all I wanted to do to it was get the gunk out of the numbers and such. It looks so much better now and I do not think I harmed it in any manner. Same coin, much different lighting.   |

Then the clean one that looks so smooth was taken under a microscope... I just took the following with my phone camera and I think it looks okay... MercLover, do you think it looks bad? It really is just a beat-up old cent that I love.   |

The mintmark location is a match:  The little 'S' had nothing to do with it. It is the D/S example (Die 2) |
