I closed my paypal account when they tried to mandate compulsory use of it. At least in Australia we managed to keep direct deposits, but the bad taste it left in my mouth prompted me to cancel the account. I now only cherry pick items on ebay. I don't buy much at all. Recently I have been sorting the entire coin list by the 99 cent starting price. I've noticed that the postage and handling fees are sometimes so exhorbitant that they are actually more than the coin itself is worth. Yet I sadly still see fools still paying way over catalogue value with a health postage charge on top. You simply cannot stop a fool and his money from being separated. I now do a lot of business with coin dealers. At least I get a fair quote on a product. They even allow me to lay-by their product. I have a dealer to whom I make a fortnightly direct deposit. I simply ring him, ask for a price and get him to put the coin away. When I'm in front (sometimes when I am simply near enough) he mails the lot to me. because of my repeat business I don't get charged postage and handling. ebay gets very little from me now. They've done their business (pooped) in the wrong nest as far as I'm concerned.

My ebay buying and selling has also dwindled this past year. I had three auctions end recently in which I lost money due to the fees. I charged the buyer less than what it cost me to ship the item, because I was so worried about being neg'd on shipping costs. I am really interested in trying alternative venues for buying and selling. And I, too, have noticed a decrease in reasonably-priced items. Many have reserves or high starting bids, some still have very high shipping. There really isn't a lot of bargains anymore. I have to search and search to find the bargains, and most of them end higher than I want to pay. So I haven't been searching as much.

Really sorry to hear all that. I've been an eBayer for 10 years, buying and selling. I liked the small potatoes aspect of it selling some stuff without the big expense of a storefront or ebay store. I've tried to eat the fees but sales are slow enough now. I too may bid them adieu. Where does a little guy sell in a friendly atmosphere ?

I'm still selling on ebay, but it's more of a challenge than it's ever been. With regard to the mandatory PayPal thing, they must have some sort of software that scans the seller's payment instructions for certain words like "check" or "money" or "order" and others. I started getting nasty-gramms from them stating that if I persisted in listing these alternate payment methods after 1-15-09 that they would pull my listings. So I decided to get creative and my instructions now read as follows: Seller's payment instructions: I accept Paypal, mnoey oredr, casiher's chcek or persnoal chcek. (I am aware of the misspellings but you understand them, right?)-- It's a great thnig taht the hmuan bairn can intrepert mispsllenigs but cpomtuer sfotwear cannot!

weerdsteve, the only problem with the misspelled words is that some bidders might think you are a scammer, many of them have misspelled words in their listings and emails.
Why not just say that you accept "other payments besides paypal, email with any questions" or something like that.

Does anyone have any links to lawsuits ongoing regarding payments on ebay? I mean, ebay goes to great lengths to protect its status as an 'intermediary' between sellers and buyers, so that they can avoid legal responsibility for all the fakes and junk they allow to be sold on their site--then they go and require payments to be made the way they say they need to be made in order to protect the people for whom they are only acting as an intermediary. Why can't buyers and sellers decide on the payment method that works for them--as long as it is legal? Anyone?

United States of America Class action filed against ebay over PayPal An anti-trust class action lawsuit has been filed in the United States of America against ebay under the Sherman Act alleging that ebay utilises its nationwide monopoly of the online auction market to monopolise the available forms of payment that sellers can use on ebay. The lawsuit alleges that 'sellers who would otherwise accept only money transfers must also accept payment card transactions'. http://www.accc.gov.au/content/inde...temId/785607The above came from the Australian Government ACCC site http://www.accc.gov.auI don't know how current it is though. You should also search the site for paypal related issues. ebay tried to force Australians to use Paypal only. We all much prefer the direct deposit method where we can put funds directly into your nominated account free of charge. We still have the ability to use a number of forms of payment. eBay International AG ebay proposed to mandate the use of online payment services provided by PayPal Australia Pty Ltd for almost all transactions on https://www.ebay.com.au.The ACCC issued a draft notice proposing to revoke the exclusive dealing notification on 12 June 2008. A predecision conference was held on 30 June 2008. ebay withdrew the exclusive dealing notification on 3 July 2008.

I'll never sell coins on ebay again if I can help it. I sell small margin items that end up not making more then a 1-5% profit. PayPal I'll keep. I use it mainly for transfers of money on the forum and with friends. Best thing with it is I can moderate monies I have between 2 bank accounts

I just "enrolled" onto this site today ,and have been searching for the forum that questioned nac grading .I too had also been on e-bay and that wa$ a really lou$y experience.Seems a few seller$ or perhap$ $hyster$ use that faux NAC grading site which has been under "construction" for a looooong time now annd passing off Xfs as MS60s . I can't believe E-bay officials (?) haven't checked on that sites validity by now.Needless to say I don't recommend e-bay at all.

I have always listed the coins I have for sale on the CCF first, but I have NEVER sold anything here. After about two weeks of no action on the Community I have listed them on ebay and they have always sold. I am just a small seller and I don't like the ebay changes either, but at least for now they are the best way to reach a broad market.
